4.0 out of 5 stars Music to smile about, 7 Aug 2007

Jonathan on great form. Impossible to listen to this without breaking into a smile. One of music's great originals. Not quite as perfect as "Modern Lovers" and "Rock'n'Roll With..." but not far behind

4.0 out of 5 stars 3 stars but a 4th due to the very cool Beserkley bonus trax, 26 Feb 2006
By Chris bct "music everyday" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers (Audio CD)
I have this album, yes, vinyl lp, from the 70's. I also have the Beserkley sampler with these 4 bonus trax. The album was never one of his strongest from the 70's. There's a coupla songs that are nice but mostly this album is a bit indlugent which Jonathan can be off and on.

The bonus trax are excellent. They seem to show up here and there on various Jonathan re-issue records. Any way you can get them they're all four worth it. Strong songs of love or how he sees life.

If yer thinking about getting this album if you don't have those 4 bonus trax then go ahead. If you do, I'd pass on getting the album cuz it's just not that memorable. No real stand out songs like he has on some other albums. chrisbct@hotmail.com

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE This Album, 14 Oct 2007
By G. Smith "Time Traveler" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers (Audio CD)
This album is one of my favorites. I got it on vinyl in the mid-'70s shortly after its initial release (without the bonus tracks) and, aside from the rather pretentious "Amazing Grace" at the end, I love it through and through.

If I were to have only one Jonathan Richman album, this would be it. It has all my favorites of his (except "Dodge Vegomatic") on it. The band's style, which reminds me of the amateur rock & roll bands we had play at our high school dances in the '60s, features addictively infectious beats, catchy tunes, and outrageously bizarre and hilarious lyrics. Some of his later stuff might be more sophisticated and even exotically folksy, but I'd rather laugh and sing along while I bop around in my seat.

I can't say it's an acquired taste because I've known people who don't like this record even after 30 years of exposure to it, but I loved it out of the box and still do. I went nuts when I saw Jonathan Richman in "There's Something about Mary" because he's still relatively unknown outside of Boston.

It is easy to discern the influence this album had on the music of the Violent Femmes.
