Husband and wife Paul Weston and Jo Stafford - big names in the serious popular music of the day - became husband and wife Jonathan and Darlene Edwards for five albums, spaced out over a quarter of a century between 1957 and 1992.

There are plenty of spoofs around, often from talented musicians, but since I was first introduced to Jonathan and Darlene in the 1970s I've viewed them as in a league of their own. This collection, and even more so Volume 2, carries us into their unique world of overambition and underawareness. Darlene just misses every note in cringeworthy fashion and turns in some real vocal gems, especially when accompanied by the very ernest male voices in Tiptoe through the Tulips or Has Anbody Seen My Girl (hints of rather avant-garde marital practices as she responds to their plea with 'Has anybody seen their girl?').

But - I hate to say it - Darlene is pretty much a one-trick act. For me the real pleasure comes from Jonathan's piano playing. Added beats, missing beats, random tubular bells in the background, bizarre switches to Mantovani-style strings, elaborate tinkling runs that just peter out and stop, a subtle slowing of the pace when dealing with particularly difficult bits ... rare that an exercise of this kind makes one laugh out loud, but this does time and again. If I had to pick one track it would be Honeysuckle Rose.

Paul died in 1996 (well into his 80s), Jo is still going strong at nearly 90. Their final album, in 1982, spawned their only sinlge, covering the Bee Gees's 'Staying Alive', represented on the first Greatest Hits.

Both these compliation albums are as indispensible to the lover of intelligent humour in music as Florence Foster Jenkins or Victor Borge. Priceless.

As a music teacher I get more than my fair share of; out of tune, out of time, missed cues, tempo changes - as it gets difficult, double starts, and added bars - where there aren't any. They are all here in some quantity and done as only expert musicians can do it. This goes to a studied bad level. Most of the errors are in all the right places, where you'd expect them, so instead of being a musical pantomime, they are wonderfully entertaining - in a musical dentist's drill sort of way. The more musical you are, the more funny they'll seem.

Jonathan & Darlene's "Greatest Hits" have changed for ever my view of these popular songs.
Jo Stafford and husband are star musicians but with this have added some great humour to these songs by their inimmitable renditions.
I just had to find more.
Always makes me smile.
