Product Description

These four discs present Jonas Kaufmann in his vocal prime, invariably placing his glorious sound at the service of music and text. The result is a collection of illuminating performances from a uniquely thoughtful, dynamic, soul-stirring artist.” Roger Pines

Jonas Kaufmann signed to Decca in 2007, and this outstanding collection of four recital CDs was recorded from 2007-2013. During those six years, there has been nothing but raining superlatives for Kaufmann, from critics and public alike. He is renowned for his versatility, and this varied selection of 50 Arias showcases his vocal flexibility in style, genres and languages.

Contents: ROMANTIC ARIAS Prague Philharmonic Orchestra Marco Armiliato

"No German tenor since Fritz Wunderlich has such a succulent Italianate tone… Yet Kaufmann is no Wunderlich sound-alike. While his free-ringing high notes have a comparable visceral excitement, his timbre is a notch duskier and more baritonal, with more heft in the middle and lower registers. He is also a scrupulous and sensitive musician, building each of these arias with the care of a Lieder singer.” The Daily Telegraph

MOZART, SCHUBERT, BEETHOVEN, WAGNER Mahler Chamber Orchestra Claudio Abbado

"Too good to be true: this was my first response to Jonas Kaufmann's new disc. But each re-listening has brought new things to praise, new confirmation of the singer's extraordinary gifts . . . each performance makes it abundantly clear that an artist of uncommon conviction is at work therein . . . this is one of the most rewarding opera-singer CDs to have come my way for years.” Opera Magazine

VERISMO ARIAS Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia Antonio Pappano

“This is a wonderful disc, the most exciting and enterprising operatic recital that I have heard for a very long time . . . Kaufmann has everything, and at the age of 40 his voice may well be in its finest shape . . . And he shows what a range of emotions and idioms there are under the heading verismo.” BBC Music Magazine

WAGNER Orchester der Deutschen Oper Berlin Donald Runnicles

“… the way in which he sings with such devotion and tenderness, responsive to every nuance, savouring every harmony, shaping every syllable, sets the listener’s pulse racing.” Die Zeit "

I started listening to this collection of C/Ds with the one cotaining Verismo arias and was pleasantly surprised to find those by Zandonai, Boito and Refice as well as the standard fare.A pleasent change. Kaufmann is the possessor of a striking and powerful voice which reminds me of the youhg Jon Vickers. He uses his rather darker timbre to good effect and one is tempted to conjecture when he might start singing Domingo's baritone roles!
The disc containing music by Mozart Beethoven etc is also interesting in as much as it gives the listener a chance to hear operatic material by Schubert .I feel Kaufmann's voice is just a size too big for this basically lyric music, while the Fidelio scene is done to perfection with burning intensity . He seems les at home in Zauberflote where he lacks the suaveness of Wonderlicht and Simaneau to name only two.The Wagner pieces are done with excquiset taste and the singer seems to be completely inside the idiom.
The Romantic Arias disc is simply wonderful and it would be churlish to critisize one or two places where one voice or another from the past did it better ,save to rejoice that in Kaufmann we have access to these glorys at the touch of a button!
We end with the Wagner disc and again Kaufmann is in his element lavising love and attention to detail on each number.Burnished tone and ease of delivery inform each aria his abillity to get inside each role renders the experience doubly rewarding.Kaufmann finishes off with an interesting version of the Wesendonck songs which again he sings with tenderness and feeling. Could it be that not only Domingros tenor /baritone roles are up for grabs but contralos and mezzos will have to look out as well!

Great singing, great choice of material and a product that is truly excellent value for money if you are an opera lover. It might even convert some non opera lovers if they could be persuaded to listen to any of the 50 Great Arias.

The finest lyric/dramatic tenor in the world. A fine artist and musician, equally at home in Italian and German opera .

It's almost impossible to say more about Jonas Kaufmann, one of the greatest singers of any age and as a package - voice, musicianship, looks, stage presence, acting - very possibly unique. Perhaps the most striking thing for me is how subtle he can be - yes of course he can belt it out when necessary, but he also has a magical touch in gently caressing a line with lovely understated tone. The perfect singer.

The best set of CDs I have ever bought ! I have played each of the 4 CDs many times now and love the variety of arias and composers. I have enjoyed discovering ones that I was not familiar with - but most of all I just love his VOICE ! So passionate, tender and full of yearning.
