Product Description

Synopsis

This is the complete book for introducing the 42 letter sounds to 3-4 year old children. For many families and pre-schools, this will become the definitive ABC book, with the advantage of being phonic, so showing all the letter sounds, not just the alphabet. Each double page spread has a letter sound with a story involving the Jolly Phonics characters of Inky, Snake and Bee. A large letter is embossed on each spread so the formation can be felt by little fingers, together with a number of words for reading and spelling and the Jolly Phonics actions.

I bought this along with the Phonics Handbook to help my daughter learn to read. We live in Brasil so she attends school in Portugese and at 6 was struggling with reading because she was confusing the English sounds with Portugese ones. This whole scheme is fantastic I cannot believe how quickly it has improved her reading and writing. This book is an excellent addition as it is divided into 6 seperate stories, each story introduces a different sound per page in the same order as the Phonics Handbook so you can read a page then do the photocopy sheet that matches the story exactly from the Handbook, my daughter really looks forward to seeing what will happen next in the story and what sound it will introduce. All the other things the earlier reviewers say are also 100% accurate, i.e. fantastic illustrations, sturdy quality etc, but buy it with the Handbook or if your child is doing Jolly Phonics at school and you will get so much more out of it.

Really good book with 42 thick fully coloured pages. Each page shows a story involving one of the 42 English sounds. Each sound is represented by many different pictures in the story of the page. It follows the Jolly Phonics method (each sound is introduced after another certain sound, not randomly). It's very bright and full of images that your child can recognise and name. It's worth the money and the child can use it at different stages of his/her learning process: at the beginning, just pointing the pictures and later saying and reading the names. I'd advise it for a minimum of 2-3 years old. The book is quite heavy and has many pictures on each page. A young toddler may not be able to handle it and can be puzzled with so many things together.

This book has taught my son all his phonic sounds in a relatively short space of time, he enjoys the stories and the interaction it provides. I have most of the jolly phonics resources but in my opinion this book is the most valuable and I highly recommend it. My son is 4.

I bought this book for my daughter, and it is cheeper on-line than in ELC. It covers all the letters in the same order that our school does (as they are following the jolly phonics method) There are raised etched letters on each page for the child to run their fingers over and it also shows the correct direction which will help them later on when writing the letter. It tells the parents what the action for each letter, and there are some simple words that you can sound out with your kids and they are asked to look out for them in the story. It is nicely illustrated and my daughter enjoys reading it with and without me, so a big thumbs up on both counts. Enjoy

I bought this shortly after my son had started school and it was enthusiastically received. If I'm totally honest I'm not sure why he likes it so much but he does. It is regularly his book of choice for bedtime, even though he only gets a few pages at a time (1 sound per double page, generally) and he doesn't get to go past the sounds they have covered in the class (at his teacher's request) so this often doesn't cover a sensible section of the "story".

Although the storyline seems somewhat contrived the illustrations are excellent with lots and lots to talk about, all linking in to the sounds being featured. It has been good for his confidence (and ability) to try reading the featured words as well. I think when he's looking at it by himself he uses it as a bit of a reference guide for the letter formations and actions.

Perhaps there is just something inherently attractive in the presentation as my toddler is fascinated by it too. (She points to the words and asks him to read them to her! Other times she "reads" it herself.) Altogether, as bemused as I am about its huge popularity I am also delighted as it is a useful educational tool.

I bought this for my 5 year old son, 4 year old daughter and 22 month old son to help them with phonics. ALthough their school (the older 2, obviously) doesn't use Jolly Phonics, the kids seem to love the book. Even my 22 month old is delighted by looking at the pictures and listening to the sounds. The big letters on each page are textured, which my 4 year old daughter seems to love. I would recommend this to anyone with kids who are learning to read. No gripes at all...

I was keen to buy a book that would help my three year to not only learn the letters of the alphabet but to also learn the sounds using phonics as well. I thought buying this book would help. Instead, I found the characters dry and the plot of each story tiresome.

Each sound has the letter written in black and white with arrows showing the way the word is to be written, which is helpful. Then in the margin, there are examples of words to match the letter sounds- but they are tiny. Hard to see let alone read. And I don't mean to be petty but the pictures look more freakish then cute.

It was really difficult trying to get my daughter to sit and read the book, because she simply was not interested in the stories or characters whatsoever!

This is a lovely book, sturdy pages, colourful and several activities on each page as well as the story relating to the letter sounds. This includes a raised letter for the child to 'trace' over with their finger. We have a Jolly phonics video and the letters in the book follow the same pattern. My 3 1/2 year old loves this book! Would recommend as an introduction to phonics
