The original edition of this book was better! It was made to be read with the children sitting in front of you. The text (which is great) was on the back & the pictures were 2 full pages in front for the kids to study while you read. This one has the pictures shrunk so small you can't even start to appreciate the detail & great work & the text often takes up more space than the pictures. It's still worth having if you don't have an earlier edition because these are the best paintings of santa ever. Whoever did this though should be ashamed & republish the original which is the greatest book on santa ever written.

If you're new to this book and thinking of buying, and you've read the other reviews here, then you'll probably be thinking this version is just ok or average.
The old version (now out of print with a mint one now costing about £100) was a bit smaller, yet had more scenes in it, and was a better quality print. The new one also seems to have zoomed in on some of the old scenes and only printed part of them. Plus it edits some of the book sequence around from the original. (Also, in a fit of political correctness, any pipe smoking by Father Christmas or the elves has been air brushed out)
However, although it would be great if the old one was re-published, I still found the new one very enjoyable to read to my 4 year old daughter, and for me it's still a 5 star book, even though I know the one my father used to read to me is better!
You get a real sense of a traditional Christmas, with the illustrations by George Hinke still a thing of beauty and wonder, especially for the young ones. My daughter often just asks me to stop telling the story so she can look at the pictures in detail, as there's so much contained in them. I would recommend this book every time.

I have not seen the original edition, but I disagree with the idea that they "ruined it" with this edition. The pictures, though somewhat smaller, are still delightful, and the creative graphics in the text (large type and colored letters for certain words and phrases) make it very appealing for a young reader. The current set-up makes this a perfect book to read with a young Santa-dreamer on your lap. And yes, this is the classis Santa story, full of fun and magic.

Like the other reviewers, I was extremely excited when I saw this book in my local book store. I agree that while the pictures are beautiful, the original's were breathtaking. I bought this book to share a little bit of my childhood with my daughter. But I will continue to search used bookstores for a 1st edition copy. The Publisher should definitely consider releasing the original version again. What a great last-Christmas-of-the-20th-century present.

The pictures in this book are amazing but this edition is a disapointment. The original editions have 2 full pages for each picture with the text on the back so it can be read to children sitting in front of you, they look at the pictures & you read. This one has the pictures shrunk to an obscenely small size with the text often taking up more of the page than the picture. Whoever did this one should be ashamed & republish the original!

Nothing can replace the real thing pub. in the 60's. However, when you grew up with this story it is wonderful to be able to share it with your own kids. I agree that the pictures are smaller then the original version, but the descriptive, delightful story remains the same. Perhaps one day, another version, with full 2 page pictures could be published. Let's just say that I am glad to still have my original copy even if it is falling apart.

As a previous reader commented, the illustrations have been reduced to a smaller size which has all but ruined the book. Also I remember a final illustration in the original of the elves having a good old pillow fight at the end of the night. This illustration was completely eliminated from this new version. A sacrilidge has been committed!

I give 4 points instead of 5, because of the paper quality, I hoped it would be not so thin 'cause it's for children. But still the book is really interesting, pictures are of high artistic quality, my child loves it!

I was given the 1st edition when I was a child and was captivated by the wonderful illustrations. The book became part of Christmas for our family, and to me what the real Santa Clause and the North Pole were truly like. Since the book was given to me; upon starting my own family, my mother packed the book along with several of my Christmas ornaments to start my own traditions. Now that I have the only copy, I wanted to get copies for both my brother and parents so they would not miss out on Christmas. I was so dissapointed with the 2nd eddition that i did not buy it for them. I will just have to share my copy with them. Shame on who ever did this to such a wonderful book, they have my pity. "Jolly Old Santa Clause" has been lost and should not be published in this format.
