A really fun read 4 Oct 2008
By L. Hennessy TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
My six-year old son loves this book - the illustrations are a bit like those of Steve Bell, the cartoonist from The Guardian.

The story concerns Roger, a young boy who everybody in his town calls 'Jolly Roger', because he's so fed up all the time. His mother is very strict, and his father never returned from sea. He sees an advert for someone to become a cabin boy for a gang of pirates, and decides to join up.

There's at least seven pirate characters in this story, so there's plenty of scope for practising your pirate voices, and a fairly sophisticated level of humour that runs through the narrative. It's quite lengthy (reading time about 20 minutes), with enough material for it to be split into two sessions if necessary.

I very much enjoyed reading this out loud, and judging by the reaction from my audience, he enjoyed it too.

The story ends with Roger finding his dad (who was suffering from amnesia after being forced to join the pirates), his mum becoming happy and smiling for the first time, and everyone living happily ever after - as all bedtime stories should do, of course ;)

This is highly recommended.

...and they all lived happily ever after. THE END
