This is a fantastic guide especially for the beginner or novice. I would recommend reading this before buying a machine as there is no substitute to making an informed choice. For your money you get chapters on :
Choosing a jointer or planer Jointer and planer accessories Basic operations Advanced operations Shop made jigs Repair and maintenance Troubleshooting The photographs and colour diagrams are of excellent quality, however I would have liked to have seen a dedicated section on the health and safety side of these machines. But that aside it's a great book for the beginner.

This book should have been a paperback half its size and half the price. Whilst appreciating that it is aimed at the novice it seems to also be aimed at readers with limited intelligence: The same information is repeated endlessly, the diagrams are large and of limited use and there are huge spaces everwhere. A glossy publication that looks attractive on the shelf but will undoubtedly disappoint.

This must be one of the best presented books. The photographs (of which there are many) are crystal clear and the illustrations are absolutely perfectly drawn. The book certainly lives up to its title "Jointers and Planers -How to choose, use and maintain them". As it is written in plain and simple terms it is ideal for the beginner who has no previous knowledge of these tools. If you are thinking of buying or using one of these tools read this book first. You won't regret it.
