I was born in 1973 in Salisbury Wiltshire UK, had an average education first at primary school, then at a comprehensive. I never went to collage but straight into the working world as a sales assistant. I remember my first jaunt through the worlds of fantasy coming from Enid Blyton's Folk of the Far Away Tree, given to me by a friend on my sixth birthday. A book I still have and read to this day. Her Secret Seven mysteries also gave me a love for crime and thrillers.
My own journey into writing came when at primary school. I used to write funny stories about my slightly dysfunctional family, having two fathers helped! I gave much of this up on entering comprehensive school and moved into all things artistic as well as photography.
When I left school and started earning my own money I bought up everything sci-fi and fantasy I could. I read some rubbish and began to think that I could do just as well if not better. I picked up my pen again and started to write what was to be, a lot of rubbish! I kept on however, buying up lots of books on writing and grammar and punctuation. I continued to work in shops until I got fed up with all the unworthy customers who crossed my path! So I took off to America where I worked aboard cruise ships, a dream I had had since Judith Chalmers and Wish You Were Here!
I did this for a few years meeting such a diverse array of people that my love for writing began again and this time I have not stopped. I returned when my visa expired to work in retail, again! This time I learned to drive fork-lift trucks, how waterproof coats work and that I make a very bad manager!
I now live in Warminster with my partner, two rabbits and a ginger cat named Gingy! Not my choice of name! And a diverse array of literature, for which I shall soon need another house, as my partner has opened up a whole new world of comedy fantasy such as Jasper Fford and forensic authors such as Kathy Reichs. I in turn introduced him to Dean Koontz and Eoin Colfer and our library has grown beyond all proportion. We can only be thankful that neither of us is particularly interested in vampires or werewolves or our little house would bulge at the windows!
Hooray for the Kindle!
As it is, when I am not writing I am reading, reading about writing, drinking when I cannot write and riding rollercoaster's when my friend has the courage to drag me away from my books, laptop or drinks cabinet!
All of the above are fun, stimulating and make my head hurt!
Victoria Cross is a pseudo-name I use for my children,s books. Marjory Dour is the first in a series, The World Next Door Chronicles, and is my first published work.
