BBC Review

Thanks to all-conquering Australian stadium dance outfit Pendulum, the spheres of drum 'n' bass and rock 'n' roll have never been closer. This is good news for The Qemists, three UK musicians lured away from their initial callings of guitar, bass and drums by the jump-up appeal of party drum 'n' bass. And while it might not be quite such good news for d 'n' b purists, who are probably getting a little tired of seeing the complexities of their beloved genre steamrollered into headbang-friendly rave rock that's every bit as subtle as a fretboard in the face, it's hard to deny Join The Q achieves a pretty impressive, rollercoaster-like momentum.

Within a deceptively simple framework of hard rock and hard beats, however, The Qemists give themselves a fair amount of room to manoeuver, inviting in a strong and varied line-up of guest vocalists and skidding through diverse genres without ever applying the brakes. The propulsive, metal-tinged Lost Weekend finds Faith No More/Fantomas frontman Mike Patton at the wheel, his wicked croon distorted by a string of effects, while S.W.A.G begins as syrupy trip-hop, sung by Alabama 3's Zoe Devlin Love, but soon picks up on tumbling drums, pneumatic bass and stabs of evil acid synth.

Not all of it works, mind. Dem Na Like Me, featuring a cameo from Wiley, is a highlight on paper, but the London grime MC sounds awkward on such stiff beats, and it doesn't help that he's recycling lines from earlier freestyles. Sometimes, too, the relative scarcity of subtlety or quiet-loud dynamics risks leaving even the most seasoned dancefloor warrior longing for the brief respite of the chill-out room. Still, it's easy to imagine a good amount of Join The Q wreaking havoc on the right crowd, and fans of Pendulum should check this out without delay. --Louis Pattison

Sunday Times

"Many bands in the past two decades have tried to fuse guitars with beats. Rarely has it sounded as right, or intense as on this record."

"An album so sonically involved and developed you'll find it impossible not to find new sounds on every listen. In a league of their own."

"A truly inspirational debut album."

I have been searching in vain for artist similar to The Prodigy and Pendulum but with no luck, they are either too hardcore dnb or a rock band which is not the same. I stumbled across this album on amazon and its brilliant. If you, like me, have been searching for this rare genre I totally recommend you buy this album. epic. (still not as good as The Prodigy however!)

Very good album 5 Dec 2009
Format:Audio CD
Unlike other reviews I feel it is unfair to compare The Qemists to Pendulum, As
personally I found the qemists to be far better with more variation in there music, and they are less mainstream.

This is an excellent album and one I wouldnt leave the house without in my CD folder.

Peace

This is a fantastic album.

Like the above reviewer I discovered these guys on a Ninja Tune compilation. They have a real raw guitar based energy about them, unusual to drum and bass. Stompbox the opening track is a raw, noisy track which really sends your pulses racing and the whole album continues in this vane. They have a more underground sound that Pendulum have shyed away from(in my opinion a bad decision. Drum and Bass, dance, even rock and metal fans will love this album

'When you're lonely' reminds me of 'Voodoo people' from the Prodigy so I see where the comparisons come, but in truth The Qemists are in a league of their own

Class.
This album is a fantastic peice of music. It screams the feeling of daft punk with a touch of, and this may sound dodgy, the likes of pendulum. Read more

The (best?) record I own
After listening to Hadouken's "for the masses" from the five albums that
arrived that one day, I took "Join the Q" with much prejudice. Was it
justified? Not on earth. Read more

Move over Pendulum....
This album is jam packed full of heavy beats, face melting electronic riffs and lots of bass. If you didn't like Pendulum's most recent pile of crap, I fully recommend this. Read more

Gotta love it
This album is so intense, I am supprised to say that barely anyone I know has even heard of the band, even when one of the tracks "Stompbox" was featured in the film Jumper. Read more

Was expecting better
There are a couple of good (not great) tracks on this CD. I was expecting something along the lines of Hold your colour i.e consistently good, but was dissapointed.

One of the most impressive albums I've heard in a long time!
I bought this album a few weeks ago after stumbling across one of their songs somewhere.

I then went on Spotify and listened to their album and within 10 minutes- BOOM! Read more

If you like Pendulum minus the dodgy vocalist this is for you.
I discovered this band/group from a Ninja Tune compilation. It contained Drop Audio & a remix of Coldcuts - Atomic Moog. Not a group I'd have thought would be signed to Ninja Tune. Read more
