From the Foreword:
"This book is... [a] celebration of the heroism that was seen 50 years ago as a consequence of a tragic accident on 4th December, 1957 at St John's railway station in Lewisham. Peter's moving book details the accident and gives a thoroughly researched insight to the way railways worked at the time. Some 90 people were killed and many more were injured. He describes the acts of bravery of the emergency services and the staff in rescuing the passengers and crew and the way the hospital card for the injured. He goes on to describe the aftermath of the accident and the investigation into the tragedy. He also pays tribute to all those who managed the repairs, reconstruction of the viaduct, bridge and line at St John's to restore rail services a mere six weeks after the accident. Inevitably, the event touches on peoples' everyday lives and there are vivid personal recollections of the day."
