Synopsis

Trying to escape a violent past in Ireland, Johnny Doyle hides out in Brixton, London's toughest West Indian neighborhood. When his sociopathic former comrade Flynn escapes from prison, Johnny is faced with not only being dragged back into violence and away from his new love, but also it ignites a simmering feud with his West Indian gang member neighbor.

sometin for the yoot 29 Dec 2006
Format:DVD
It was pacy, it has a great reggae soundtrack, and it has a very unusual cast of the odd actor and a brace of sportstars and musicians. And it isn't in Brixton. I thought it passed an afternoon passably.

But. There's a big but. I watched it with my eighteen year old son. It's hard to get him to spend an afternoon with me. He was rooted to the spot - except to pump up the volume. Repeatedly.

When it was over he ejected it and took it to his room where he could play it again. Louder. He raved - one of his top handful. In fact right now I think it is his top film ever. He likes some grit and this has plenty. Decor is all strictly of the pre-makeover variety.

Give it a pop, you might like it. If you were born after 1985, you'll probably love it. And a note to the producers: a sountrack album would go down a bomb.

Johnny Was 31 Oct 2008
Format:DVD
This film is so stupid it is funny. Vinnie Jones is his usual self and performs well. Other characters are ok but two stand out. Lennox Lewis- when was he ever an actor! He trys to be a Jamaican DJ and is awful. Samantha Mumba has the worst irish accent ever! However, the mistakes in the film almost add to the general feeling of the film. Many lost characters- mainly criminals who have ridiculous ideas and even stranger friends. Probably sold cheaply so buy for a bit of a laugh

great British Gangster movie 1 Sep 2006
By B. Katz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you like British Gangster movies, this one wont let you down. It's got a GREAT cast. Roger Daltrey from the Who even does a small part, as does Eriq La Salle from ER and Vinnie Jones from SNATCH and LOCK STOCK. Solid reggae throughout, lots of action seens, a few amazing car chases through europe a la Ronin... I'd rent it again on a rainy night.

A great brit crime flick 2 Sep 2006
By A. Nagpal - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
But this one has a different spin to it. This film shows the seedy underbelly of London like most of those hi gloss ones don't. And while Layer Cake, Lock Stock, etc. are great this film has an authenticity and feel that the others cant match. I dont know how the director got such good chemistry from this diverse cast, but all I can say is.....hats off. This is an exciting but thought provoking action/crime flick I would recommend to anyone.

"If a man ain't got no roots he don't have no future." 5 Oct 2006
By Steven Hong - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
Simply Awesome! Vinnie Jones delivered his best performance as Johnny Doyle a man struggling to get away from his past. He is absolutely convincing as a troubled former bombmaker with a conscience. I'm really starting to become a fan of his work ever since I saw him in Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Their was an interesting parallel that was drawn between the forces of Irish terrorists and that of the local neighborhood druglord, Julius. Lennox Lewis' role as Ras, a Rastafarian radio DJ adds depth to the story. He has a "zen" presence that complements Eriq La Salle's character who is simply after one thing: money. The dialog was brilliant; chock full of dozens of quotable lines. I highly recommend this to anybody that enjoyed Snatch or Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
