Johnny Suede, is a pretty good underground movie. Not too spoil it for anyone, it's about a young kid who's obsessed with getting a country blues band together and his journey to keep his pair of blue suede shoes. Sounds pretty corny, i know, but it is plesently surprising. I saw it years ago on TV and it's always been my favourite Brad Pitt role. The film is very surreal, not surreal enough to be a David Lynch film, but weird and strange tings do happen.

Nick Cave makes an appearence and he's not bad. I like to think of Johnny Suede as maybe a starting point for Nick Cave to actually go out there and make his own film (which he has done). It is quite sad that not too many people know about Johnny Suede as it is a superb film. Then again, i don't want the whole world to know about this brilliant underground cult film. Why can't Brad Pitt act this well in all his films???

This films doesn't go anywhere far, stars Brad Pitt, Nick Cave & Sam L Jackson and is as quirky as anything David Lynch would want to film. Thing is it does seem to have it's heart in the right place and it good to see Hollywood Superstars going "indie" in such a good way. Word is that Brad Pitt was such a prima donna that the director based his main character from Living in Obilivion on him - but that might be Hollywood myth.

I wouldn't rate this highly on any level other than it's a wierd, quirky little number that should seen - hence the 4 star rating!

Tom DiCillo's first film. Already a cult classic. This little independent film is an off-beat masterpiece. Johnny Suede (Brad Pitt) is an aspiring rock n' roll singer who wants to be just like his idol, Ricky Nelson.

He is ready to rock n' roll, except he needs some black suede shoes.

As if by magic a pair fall from the sky.

Meanwhile, Johnny enters a relationship with the young and pretty - though somewhat strange - Darlette, who is also in a relationship with an equally strange older man. Things go along well until Johnny has to pawn his guitar for rent money. Darlette disappears. Deke, his band member - and friend - lends him the cash to get his guitar back and they are a band again and Johnny meets Yvonne, a more mature lady. Yvonne (Catherine Keener) falls in love with Johnny and tries to make him see that there a more things in life than being in a rock n' roll band and owning a pair of suede shoes.

Other stand-out performances include Nick Cave as Freak Storm (another quiffed rock n' roller who gives Johnny 'his song') and Samuel L Jackson who plays B-Bop, one of Johnny's band. DiCillo often works with Jim Jarmusch (as cinematographer) and has directed a handful of off-beat films: 'The Real Blonde', 'Living in Oblivion', and 'Delirious'. He recently directed 'When You're Strange' (2009) a film narrated by Johnny Depp about 1960s blues rock band The Doors.
