Synopsis
The Marx Brothers meet THE GODFATHER when the bumbling Dante (Roberto Benigni) discovers that there's nothing organized about organized crime in this hilarious tale of mistaken identity. A naive schoolbus driver, Dante finally meets the passionate woman of his dreams; unfortunately, she only wants him for his body--his dead body. Dante doesn't realize he looks just like mobster Johnny Stecchino and that femme fatale Maria (Nicoletta Braschi) is setting him up to be the victim of a hit so that she and husband Johnny can escape the crime world. The dim-witted innocent doesn't catch on fast; every time a round of gunfire goes off, Dante thinks he's being hunted for shoplifting a banana. JOHNNY STECCHINO reveals why Benigni has become Italy's most popular film comedian. Like Buster Keaton in 1934's LE ROI DE CHAMPS-ELYSEE or Charlie Chaplin in 1921's THE IDLE CLASS, Benigni hams it up playing two roles, seamlessly slipping back and forth between hapless Dante and the murderous Johnny Stecchino.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Touch Bananas in Palermo!, 25 Oct 2005

If you should have watched FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL more than 5 or 10 times this is going to be your second "Desert Island" comedy to take with you. Roberto's facial expressions alone are funny enough to get hooked to this ingenious comedy. Not to mention how he surveys e.g. the Italian mobster's vanity. Can brushing off dust from trouser cuffs be a laughing matter? It can indeed. And both lead characters are so endearing . . . Tears of laughter. Have a tissue ready.

4.0 out of 5 stars Messing up the Mafia, 4 Oct 2002
By Didier Danillon (Macclesfield) - See all my reviews

Set in the Mafia Sicily, this comedy is a classic example of Roberto's Begnini's skill to turn a subject usually treated as serious or dramatic into a hilarious adventure. As usual, the story's plot is best not revealed, but it revolves around the mistaken identity of a repentant Mob celebrity. If you like ingenuous comedys you'll love R. Begnini's wittiness. Directing this movie and co-acting with Nicoletta Braschi, his wife, he uses once more the couple's obvious chemistry to create the unique fable atmosphere of his previous work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good film, let down by bad production, 9 April 2003
I imagine most people who watch a Benigni film were introduced to him by Life is Beautiful. This film doesn't have the same poignancy, being pure comedy, but it does have plenty of funny moments. The film is based on mistaken identity, between a bus driver, and a mafia man, both played by Benigni, and the film is well written and performed. The film itself probably merits four stars rather than three, but I give it three simply because of the translation. As someone who speaks a little Italian I found myself distracted by constantly finding the subtitling inaccurate and unimaginative. It's especially disappointing compared to the subtitles for Life is Beautiful, which were superb.

It's also slightly frustrating that the subtitles can't be turned off, but I shouldn't imagine that will be a problem for most people.

Essentially, a good film, very funny in places, and worth seeing, especially if you can get it for just a tenner!
