Book Description

12 May 2011

There are few people better acquainted with the West Country than Johnny Kingdom. His knowledge of local wildlife is second to none, but he's also a fount of knowledge when it comes to all the old stories that get passed down from generation to generation. West Country Tales is a charming collection of these local myths and legends, interwoven with many more anecdotes from Johnny himself and his forbears and friends.

The atmospheric West Country landscape lends itself perfectly to dramatic tales of eerie hauntings and ghostly happenings, daring smugglers and dashing highwaymen, and many have heard of - or might even have seen - the modern-day legend that is the Beast of Exmoor. But what about the Flying Fish of Exmoor, a slippery catch of Johnny's that sailed up and over a bridge into the back seat of a passing open-top car, never to be seen again?

Gently humorous and wonderfully evocative, it's only a matter of time before some of Johnny's own tales weave their way into West Country lore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Johnny Kingdoms, West Country Tales 13 Jun 2011
By sawway
Format:Hardcover
I am 80 yrs old, this is my life except my area is The New Forest and Cranbourne Chase. Johnny Kingdom is a master, I enjoy all of his work. We did not know how lucky we were in the era we grew up in. We had very little, but what we had was pure gold, time and friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Johnny the tale teller 2 Mar 2013
By Jaxom
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I added this Kingdom book to library as Johnny's other books are so difficult to put down. (His video's are among my most played). This book works well on short bus trips and as a 10 min. read before lights-out. Well done again Johnny Kingdom for weaving wonderful words into your West country sagas!

2.0 out of 5 stars Let down by the publisher 1 Dec 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The stories are good enough, but the publisher has let Johnny down by failing to edit properly. For example, on one page Barnstaple is mis-spelt with a "b" instead of a "p", then spelt correctly just a few lines below. Elsewhere, Johnny speaks of the death of a certain woman, and of his responsibility for digging her grave, but then immediately goes on to refer to the deceased repeatedly as "he".
