Amazon.co.uk Review

Rowan Atkinson reprises his role as the slightly hapless, but still remarkably effective secret agent Johnny English in Johnny English Reborn. Atkinson's deadpan slapstick delivery is in fine form in this sequel to 2003's Johnny English. The sequel actually delivers as an excellent action film, with outstanding cinematography showcasing scenes as diverse as Hong Kong and Tibet, as well as a comedy along the lines of Get Smart. Johnny English Reborn opens in the mountains of Tibet, where a disgraced English has been living in a monastery, learning focus, attentiveness, and martial arts of the avoidance rather than of the über-attack variety. He is suddenly called back into action to serve Her Majesty in the spy agency MI-7, to help take down an international ring of assassins. English is reluctant at first, but then jumps at the chance to avenge the mistakes he made years earlier, and to deploy his new arsenal of skills. Johnny English is a very crisply directed, well-written, and even unpredictable comedy-action spoof, and it just might make fans out of Rowan Atkinson doubters. The timing of the gags is really well done, and Atkinson seems game for just about anything. He is also surrounded by a splendid supporting cast. Gillian Anderson plays the severe new head of MI-7, Pamela, with crisp assurance. Rosamund Pike is the comely Kate, a potential love interest for Agent English. And Daniel Kaluuya plays newbie Agent Tucker, who is assigned to accompany English, and who brings skills (and baggage) of his own. Director Oliver Parker, known mostly for his remakes of classics like Othello and The Importance of Being Earnest, brings a sure vision and entertaining pace to Johnny English Reborn. There's some crude humor, mostly in the form of blows to various groins, but there's no bad language or over-the-top grossness, so Johnny English Reborn is suitable for older kids and teens. --A.T. Hurley

DVD Description

Rowan Atkinson returns to the role of the accidental secret agent who doesn't know fear or danger in the comedy spy-thriller Johnny English Reborn. In his latest adventure, the most unlikely intelligence officer in Her Majesty's Secret Service must stop a group of international assassins before they eliminate a world leader and cause global chaos. In the years since MI-7's top spy vanished off the grid, he has been honing his unique skills in a remote region of Asia. But when his agency superiors learn of an attempt against the Chinese premier's life, they must hunt down the highly unorthodox agent. Now that the world needs him once again, Johnny English is back in action. With one shot at redemption, he must employ the latest in hi-tech gadgets to unravel a web of conspiracy that runs throughout the KGB, CIA and even MI-7. With mere days until a heads of state conference, one man must use every trick in his playbook to protect us all. For Johnny English, disaster may be an option, but failure never is.

Johnny English Reborn 12 Oct 2011
Format:DVD
I usually find watching the sequel to a brilliant film a disappointment. With this film, however, that was not the case. If you enjoyed the first Johnny English film, you'll enjoy this one too. I was at the cinema last night and laughed quite a few times aloud, along with many other people. I'll definitely be watching this film again sometime.

Spying For You 22 Oct 2011
By Rob Payne TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Blu-ray
Johnny English Reborn has, like its 2003 predecessor, taken a bit of a critical kicking. Perhaps it's unfashionable for a serious film critic to admit to enjoying a film that is clearly made to be an easy-to-watch, silly and very British Spy farce. Reborn is basically a vehicle for Rowan Atkinson's rubbery talents and unquestionable prowess for physical comedy, and while it undoubtedly retreads some familiar ground, is better than most critics would have you believe.

Our unlikely bumbling Superspy, currently lying low after a `balls-up' on a mission in Mozambique, is learning martial arts in a Himalayan mountain retreat. He is summoned back to MI7 to liaise with an informant who will speak only to him and here he uncovers a plot to assassinate the Chinese Premier, sending him on a globe-trotting mission to uncover the truth behind a terrorist organisation known as `Vortex'.

English returns from his Himalayan retreat braver, stronger, faster and with a heightened ability to take repeated kicks to the groin. He is a less desperate character than in his first outing, though still accident-prone and he approaches everything with an ill-deserved but rather endearing smugness.

The film is amusing and diverting rather than hilarious, but there are still a few very funny moments which I will not spoil by describing and one in particular involving an important meeting with the PM and English's broken chair, which had me literally crying with laughter. There is also a constantly amusing running gag where English repeatedly mistakes little old ladies for a Chinese assassin.

The excellent supporting cast, including Gillian Anderson as MI7 chief Pegasus, Dominic West (of The Wire) and the gorgeous Rosamund Pike, herself a former Bond Girl, is perhaps a little under-used, but they do their best with the material they are given. Watch out though for rising star Daniel Kaluuya, who puts in a promising comedic performance as wet-behind-the-ears Special Agent Tucker, who still lives with his mum.

Yes, the humour is rather old-fashioned, with an over-reliance on sight gags and slapstick, but actually feels quite refreshing at a time when cinema releases are littered with gross-out comedies. Not every joke hits its mark, but there's enough amiability and good natured fun to carry it through its 100 minute running time.

Watch it expecting high-brow humour, and you'll be disappointed. Not a critic's favourite then, but as an undemanding slice of good family fun, it succeeds.

JE...REBORN! 17 April 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and, IMO, it is a huge improvement on the first one. I did enjoy the first JE movie but found it a bit strained and too slapstick in parts whereas 'Reborn' came over as a slicker, smarter movie with a better script and more credible plot. Once again Rowan Atkinson was outstanding in the lead role parodying the earlier, more gadgety Bond movies (think Roger Moore era) with terrific skill and timing. Rosamund Pike was gorgeous as ever in her role as the SIS Behavioural Psychologist and Gillian Anderson did a good 'tongue in cheek' job of replicating Judi Dench's 'M' but with a very serious nod towards the dumbing down/bleeding heart bunch who want to turn our magnificent Intelligence Services into hand holding/head stroking creche assistants - as if we could afford for that to happen in these days of global terrorism! Overall this was a great fun movie.
