4 stars - A lovely tale of a boy with determination! (www.bettybookmark.co.uk)

The clear print and eloquent illustrations would make this a good present for someone who has just learned to read. (Spectator)

A classic, evergreen tale from the master storyteller/ illustrator. A gentle, funny tale of perseverance against the odds. (Irish Examiner)

How grateful I am that Frances Lincoln are allowing the book a fresh chance to claim its place in the pantheon by more than matching the quality of production of the earlier editions. (Books for Keeps)

HASH(0x9bba84ec) out of 5 stars My favorite children's picture book of all time! 24 Feb. 2009
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

I am giddy with delight that this PERFECT picture book has been reprinted! For years I have been sharing this treasure with friends, but usually in the form of a very WORN ex-library book -- as many as I could get my hands on.

Johnny is a delightful chap, with a persevering spirit and an unquenchable drive to do something he is told he is not capable of -- building a grandfather's clock.

His parents, portrayed very realistically as rather normal busy parents, do not take Johnny's endeavors seriously at all. "Stuff and nonsense" -- Johnny's up to it again.

With the help of a friendly blacksmith and the endearing support of a true friend, Johnny fulfills his vision and becomes something of a hero at the end.

This is a delightful and inspiring picture book -- one that your children will ask to read (and have read to them) again and again.

Buy it now while you have the chance!

HASH(0x9cc0fca8) out of 5 stars Loved this book! 22 Jan. 2013

Loved this book as a child. It's still a great story today. The character Johnny had many obstacles in his way. Sadly, even his own parents weren't supportive. He still found a way to achieve his goal. It's a story of never giving up a dream in spite of all the naysayers around you.

HASH(0x9c069be8) out of 5 stars Wonderful old book! 27 Sept. 2014
By Stephen P. Piscitello, jr - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
"Johnny" was one of my daughter's favorite books from 30 years ago. I liked it enough to remember it from so long ago. Recently I took it out of the library because my little granddaughter was visiting.

"Johnny" is an elegant book with a great story of perseverance and inner confidence. It's old fashioned illustrations are lovely.

The only objection I have to the book is that the female figure Suzannah is mainly supportive. (However, we can live with that; there are plenty of books with active main characters who are girls.)

I loved this book as a child, it got me interested in building things and finding out how things functioned. The writing and the illustration are charming and timeless.
