Product Description

Review

[Kleist] fluidly depicts the late Man In Black s rise from Depression era poverty, through to his early 1950s jam sessions with Elvis to 17-time Grammy winning legend. No veils are drawn over Cash s drug abuse and womanising; here myth doesn t overpower the man... Kleist s inky, impressionistic brushwork gives Cash s story a strong, fresh, dark edge. --The Metro

5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasing read. 27 Jun 2011

This is my first experience of a graphic novel and wow what a place to start. The German author has won awards in his homeland for his fine artistic endeavour. From a boy growing up and coming to terms with his brothers death on a government subsidised cotton farm through to the infamous Fulsom Prison Blues and on to his latter years and his close relationship with Rik Rubens that saw the American releases. The book has only 3 chapters and I had read it in one quite short sitting thanks to the very nature of a book filled with finely illustrated drawings. Some pages have no words at all and its amazingly refreshing and thrilling to be able to "read" the pictures instead. Indeed my 7 year old son recognised the song Ghost Riders In The Sky from one drawing. The author does a fantastic job at planting songs in your mind as your reading. This isnt an indepth read of a mans great life yet gives a clear picture of all his lifes milestones. Certainly one to keep and return to from time to time if only to appreciate the finely sketched drawings. A must have for any true fan.
