From the Manufacturer

"We are determined to make our whisky of such a standard that nothing in the market shall come before it."

– Alexander Walker, 1887

Whisky Tradition in a Glass

Regarded by experts as the ultimate Scotch deluxe whisky, the benchmark by which all others are measured. With its origins in the 1870s Old Special Highland Whisky, Johnnie Walker Black Label simply became "Black Label" in 1909.

  • The origins of Johnnie Walker Black Label go back to when John Walker's son Alexander took over in 1857.
  • By 1889, John Walker & Sons had businesses established in London, Sydney and Paris, and distribution agents appointed as far as South Africa, America and India.
  • By the 1890s, Alexander II and George, the grandsons of John Walker, were running the business.
  • The distinctive slanted black label was the key, and three years later in 1909 the words "BLACK LABEL" appeared on the bottle for the very first time.

Beautifully Balanced

Each bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label is two decades in the planning, draws whisky from the finest distilleries across Scotland and is aged in the finest whisky casks. Each whisky is matured in a slightly different way, due to the intricacies of wood, climate and location. The Master Blender's skill is in blending these whiskies together to create a whisky with an extraordinary range of flavour.

A continued focus on quality and style has resulted in Johnnie Walker Black Label earning numerous awards. Today the blend remains as rich and smooth as it was when John Walker's son and grandson were Master Blenders.

Johnnie Walker has the luxury of having exclusive access to Scotland's very best whiskies, ranging from the powerful west coast malts all the way to the more subtle east coast flavors. Black Label draws upon all these aromas to create a unique blend with a smooth, deep and complex character.

It can be enjoyed on its own, with a dash of still or sparkling water, or with soda or ginger ale as a long drink.

Other Products in the Range

Each with its own distinct personality, history and story to tell. Whichever suits the moment, you can be assured of the consistency and quality of flavour that’s kept Johnnie Walker walking for almost 200 years.

Johnnie Walker Double Black Whisky 70 cl

The flavour is full bodied and complex with the signature Johnnie Walker peat smoke shining brightly through rich raisins and sultanas. Apples, pears and orange zest bring freshness while creamy vanilla and spice bring a softness and sweetness to the tongue. The long warming finish combines spicy oak tannins and lingering smoke.

The Johnnie Walker Brand is the biggest selling blended scotch in the world and it's the Black label that wins it for them. Regardless of where you buy a bottle, whether it be in your local Supermarket, Whisky Specialist, online or indeed abroad as i have done while in Japan, i can confirm that each and every bottle i have bought has been consistent each and every time. I've never been disappointed by the quality and it's the one blended scotch i can rely on regardless of where i am.

Among the many different malt and grain whiskies in this blended scotch the two main ones are Talisker and Caol ila for those that want to know and both are equally impressive on their own but together they create something truly special. This whisky is at 40% alcohol by volume and no whisky in this blend is under 12 years old.

Now nosing and tasting whisky is subjective to each person so keep that in mind when you read my own personal tasting notes below.

Nose Neat: Initially toffee and a persistent sweetness with smoke all the way through

Taste Neat: Very smoky and an alcoholic bite on the tip of the tongue, behind the smoke you get a sweetness coming from toffee and dried fruits such as raisins.

After adding a few drops of water and waiting 10 minutes:

Nose: More rounded and the smoke has settled down with the toffee on the nose really coming through

Taste: Still smoky but not as overpowering so the dried fruits and toffee really come through, almost a creamy-ness to it.

Finish: Drying in the mouth, smoke and toffee lingers for a few minutes.

Other things i noted: Seems to last at the back of the throat longer than many other whiskies, probably down to the peat they have used.

Johnnie Walker Black label is an absolute cracker of a whisky. If you haven't tried Johnnie Walker before then I suggest starting with the Black label as personally I think it is Johnnie Walkers best Whisky (Excluding the Blue label as I've not tried it yet).

Forget the Green Label (for it's price you may as well get a single malt) and don't waste your time with the red unless you are mixing your Whisky with coke or lemonade. The black Label I personally believe tastes the best straight no water no mixer.

Pick up a bottle and enjoy!

My favourite whisky bar none... well double black is lovely too but I am still undecided. I think I'll have to do some more taste testing :)

Box, bottle, drink, all presented well.

I'll admit, I am new to the world of whisky so am no expert. However as I am maturing I find that my taste in drinks is maturing also - no longer do I like the sweet, youthful "party" drinks. I find myself after a tipple of something such as rum or whisky.

This whisky seems ok, but, maybe because its a blended whisky, has nothing distinctive about it in my opinion. I could not really sense any flavours "coming out". For a good price, you get a good whisky - but nothing special. It's ok at the end of the day over ice!

I actually received the bottle not in the regular black box, but in a limited edition tin box (picture attached). For £20 I think this is a brilliant deal.
