This is another great book from Brian Belton looking at the life of West Ham's first black player, John Charles. It is a touching and telling story, that also gives a complete history of the FA Youth Cup, the trophy that 'Charlo' Skippered the Hammers to in 1963 for the first time.
But it is also part of the tale of how black players came into the game and the 'real' racism (not from fellow players, nor fans) in the game...the institutional discrimination that prevents talented black players from becomeing coaches, managers and certainly Football League and FA executives.
This is a real, true to life work. It is the best football book for ages.

Though I am not a huge football fan, I found myself drawn to this book and read every page! The life story of John Charles, the first black footballer for West Ham United Football Club, is a universal one, wrought with great triumphs and disappointments, grand failures coupled with redemption and transcendence. Though a highly-talented football player, John Charles' life is one that we can all identify with--whether black or white, young or old, footballer or not. Lovingly chronicled by the author, whose poetic style and gift for words brings a breath of fresh air to the genre of sports writing, the book is enhanced by numerous photos that illustrate Charles' life and career, making this not just another book on football or sporting! Highly recommended for those interested in West Ham, football, racism in sports, sports biographies or anyone interested in an uplifting, inspiring, courageous life story.
