Product Description

Review

"A historically situated set of analyses is just what John Zorn deserves as a major artist of our time. The present volume will be important in furthering an understanding of his work." George Lewis, Columbia University "Brackett's first move is to loosen Zorn from the moorings of postmodernism and that most critical assessments of his work attach him to. For Brackett, Zorn is as much modernist as postmodernist...Rather than rehash the postmodern critical blather about 'channel surfing' and borrowed materials from high and low culture that is so often used to describe Zorn's techniques, Brackett emphasises the unity that Zorn strives for in his pieces between seemingly opposing elements, carefully crafting a proper flow and balance. He sees Zorn as a composer who is pushing the boundaries rather than defining them, which is where the transgression of the title comes in."-Alan Licht, The Wire, March 2009

Product Description

John Zorn is one of the most prolific and active American composers/performers working today and has been a fixture of New York's "Downtown Scene" since the mid-70s as a tireless proponent of avant-garde and experimental music. Despite the acclaim and respect he has achieved in America and abroad, very little attention has been paid to Zorn by musicologists or music theorists. Author John Brackett suggests that the reason for the relative paucity of writing on Zorn's music and musical thought has to do with the difficulties and challenges it presents both for listeners and scholars.Zorn's musical language - an amalgam of seemingly incongruous techniques, sounds, styles, and genres - creates complex and sometimes confusing listening experiences that are difficult to categorize in terms of overarching thematic or narrative design. Brackett offers a number of perspectives for understanding Zorn's music and musical practices, while challenging certain assumptions that limit the ways in which contemporary music is typically addressed.

Zzzzzzzzzz 6 Dec 2010

I love John Zorn.I love John Zorn's music. I've been fortunate enough to meet the man himself. I bought a book about my favourite composer. Its boring.
If you are a budding musicologist, buy it.
If you have a lot of free time to sit and decipher the pretentious ramblings of the author, buy it.
If you want an interesting book about Zorn and his works, avoid. Watch the documentary instead.

not too impressed 5 May 2010
By J. Forst - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Long story short - I own over 120 original Zorn recordings and was much looking forward to this book. Instead of examining and dissecting each of Zorn's works this instead is more like a thesis paper. For instance, once the subject of the s&M themes of certain Naked city releases is brought to light the writer starts discussing social responses and opinions to matters like Japans particular fetishes and other controversial subjects to be discussed at length. This book trailed off too many times about the world view of Zorn themes rather than discussing the tremendous amout of output and its varying genres represented between his exhaustive catalogue.
