Having recently been given this book as a gift by a fellow movie loving friend I can honestly say that I wished I'd tracked it down earlier,

The book itself is a "behind the scenes" look at a film legend, not being a film legend but still coming across as larger than life, this is a pictorial reference showing Duke as a loving family man with a self depracating wit and good humour and without an ounce of self pretension, this was evident in the shots showing Duke without his hairpiece on, which did not bother him in the slightest, it was also a validation to Shaw that he was not viewed as some kind of threat by Wayne or his family,

Literally dozens of books on John Wayne have been published over the years covering some kind of angle, usually connected with friends and family, ex-wife Pilar, daughter Aissa, Secretary(and later partner)Pat Stacy, make-up men, stand in's, ships captains, etc, etc, but this book did not have this type of backdrop as it is simply a 60's snapshot, an era preserved on film that we were lucky to get at all, no hidden agenda just a series of lovely and revealing glimpses at a man who was viewed as a screen giant but would rather be caught making faces at the camera, playing with the kids, or lazing in the garden, as I said I wished I had hunted this out earlier but I'm thankful I was able to read it at all thanks to a like-minded friend,

So if you're a fan of the big man himself and you havn't got this book then you'll be doing yourself a big favour if you buy it right away, that'll avoid one of your friends having to buy it for you!...;=))
