Mixed bag 8 April 2010
Well, this took me back. Specifically, to a childhood in the early 60s, watching films like this on TV. Mostly wartime and post-war American propaganda, and with none of the production values that viewers of today would expect, these are nonetheless mostly entertaining films.

Wayne plays the same character he does in all of his movies, so you know what to expect. "The Sands of Iwo Jima" is the pick of the bunch here, with the two "Flying" titles and "Seabees" close behind. "Back to Bataan" is OK.

The odd one out - in more ways than one - is "Jet Pilot". Set in the cold war era, this one is a real clunker. But for less than a tenner for six films, it would be churlish to complain.

Bargain.

RC UK 24 Dec 2010

Great movies for a £10.00 is a real bargain. The fighting construction battalion called Seabees is a nice movie where the construction workers or "civilians" does not need to fight and let the armed forces handle it. The problem though they are always caught in a crossfire. The flying tigers is a movie about volunteer pilots for China during the Japanese invasion until such time that the US formally declared war against Japan after the bombing of Pearl Harbour (Sunday, December 7, 1941). Back to Bataan is filmed in the Philippines (after the war). Places like Bulacan, Bataan, Manila and Leyte were the scenes. It is nice to hear from the old educational system the difference between the Spanish education and American educational system. Where the Spaniards spread Catholicism, the Saints and the Virgin Mary while being productive in your own line of work and and the American way of spreading freedom provided that you are not too dependent on their assistance.

The Sands of Iwo Jima is a movie about the US Marines. How they are trained and disciplined themselves for war footing. Not to think too much back home while on tour duty otherwise they end up in body bags. The Flying Leathernecks is about leadership in the marine air command. Being bypassed for a promotion and who knows his own men argues with his superior officer (John Wayne) on how he should run his own outfit, the subordinate officer or the new commanding officer. The Jet Pilot is about a supposed to be a Russian defector who happens to be a woman that John Wayne fell in love. It is love affair in the air and showing off their skills. It is a cold war film mixed with humour.

Awesome 3 Dec 2010
Perfect this is the only John Wayne war films in a box set so I was well over the moon. Need more as the others I have seen are with other war films.

Awesome.
