Product Description

Review

"A joint biography of two of the intellectual giants of the 20th century.... Heims captures the tension of the Manhattan Project...and continues with the story of the nuclear weapons race of the early 1950s, which he views as inhuman. He also seeks to define the social function of scientists."--"Library Journal"

Product Description

John von Neumann and Norbert Wiener were mathematician-scientists, both child prodigies born near the turn of the century. As young men each made profound contributions to abstract mathematics.

An excellent read 22 Sep 2006
Format:Paperback
I read this book about 25 years ago whilst a budding mathematician waiting to go up to University to studdy pure maths.

The contrast between these two giants on 20th centuary mathematics is fascinating. The book is written with a great deal of sympathy for these two academics personal shortcomings but at no time does it ever become sentimental.

If you're interested in the development of maths in the 20th centuary or just want a good biography, I can reccommend this book highly
