Product Description

CD Description

The Colours of Christmas is a collection of the greatest Christmas carols by the composer/conductor whose music has, for many, been so associated with Christmas. Featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and The Bach Choir, with guest artists Over the Bridge and conducted by Rutter himself.

The Colours of Christmas (track 2 from the album) is a newly composed carol by Rutter for this new album, and is testament to the very best of Rutter’s music. Newly orchestrated for this album are the carols Ding Dong Merrily On High and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. All recordings on this album are brand new.

4.0 out of 5 stars Father Christmas's mixed bag 18 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD
It is almost impossible to give this album a single number star-rating because it is so many different things. If you think from its title ("JOHN RUTTER" in big bold red capitals) that it is a follow-up to his brilliant CD with the Cambridge Singers "The John Rutter Christmas Album you will be disappointed in that there are only two Rutter carols and even those are not sung in the chapel choir style that made Rutter's work so famous and so loved. The resources of the Bach Choir are vastly more powerful and this produces a wholly different "feel", suited to an Albert Hall concert - indeed "Joy to the World" is sung just like the Hallelujah! chorus. But this is deliberate and if it is what you want it is great stuff.
The plus side of it being a "concert" album is that at the end we get three American light pieces -Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride, Mel Tormé's The Christmas Song and the Judy Garland classic Have yourself a merry little Christmas. This last is the most enjoyable for those wanting superb small choir singing because it is sung in a close harmony arrangement, which was in fact included in Rutter's "A Christmas Festival" in 2008.. This time he has brought in "Over the Bridge", choral singers from Cambridge, to sing it and as one hears lovely close harmony from a counter-tenor in a small choir one thinks "At last - that's what I want to hear on a Rutter album.
So, mixed but something for everyone and one should not grumble too much when there are two pure Rutter carols to enjoy; and you end up thinking Why isn't his CBE promoted into a knighthood for his services to choral music?

5.0 out of 5 stars gives you that christmassy feeling 28 Jan 2012
By Doris
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
personally speaking, classical music is not really my thing. I always want to like it and put in on wanting that feeling of calm and tranqility that you see on the television (eg on Morse) but get to the third track and I am bored. However, this album is somewhat different and was absolutely lovely to have on in the background over the christmas period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fabulous Christmas disc from JR 3 Dec 2011
By JayJay
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
You won't be disappointed in this excellent new offering from John Rutter. A beautiful new carol is included on the recording along with other great favourites arranged or composed by the conducter. Even though many of these carols are featured on pervious recordings made by the Cambridge Singers, the Bach Choir do not disappoint in their renditions. What an added bonus to feature the vocal ensemble 'Over the Bridge' a group who I had not heard of before, but who remind me very much of the Kings Singers!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine album of its type 9 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD
This is a fine album, of its type. Nick is being a bit hard on it with his three star review. I defer to him on record company politics, but must correct his unresearched comments about Over the Bridge. They are an eight man close harmony A Capella group and not remotely "sub King Singers". Go and see them live sometime if you don't believe me.
Their first album "Under the Influence" was produced by John Rutter. Presumably that's why they are on this album, heard here with backing for pretty much the first time. Their album doesn't seem to be on Amazon (get your act together, Amazon) but is downloadable from a well known music store.
I agree about the saccherine arrangement of "Have yourself a very Merry Christmas", but bet that that is what we hear on their upcoming Christmas BBC TV appearances, things being what they are.

5.0 out of 5 stars John Rutter IS Christmas 30 Nov 2011
By skecksi
Format:Audio CD
John Rutter's arrangements are always beautiful, and this CD doesn't disappoint, with some unusual rhythmic variations on the carols we all think we know! His new carol, The Colours of Christmas, is just as beautiful, and performed superbly by the Bach Choir. I already know that this will be the soundtrack to my Christmas this year, and every year to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Colours of Christmas 13 Jan 2012
Format:Audio CD
Some Christmas CDs' are put in a drawer and forgotten until the following year.

This CD, John Rutter's, "The Colours of Christmas," certainly will not suffer that fate.

When I first played it, I was so overwhelmed by the beauty, that I ordered two more copies for my cousins and then ended up giving my copy to a friend.

Although it is a Christmas CD, it is something I could listen to, at any time of the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Christmas music 9 Jan 2012
Format:Audio CD
This is an album of beautiful Christmas music. If you like Rutter's style of aranging, you will love this CD. The arrangements and the singing are superb. His versions of some of the old well-loved carols, and of his own new one, are marvellous. IMHO this is the best version of O Holy Night that I have ever heard. There is just one track I don't like, but since Rutter has sometimes been criticised for being too predictable and samey all credit to him for having a go at something different. Others may love that track especially. All in all this is one of the best albums of traditional Christmas music

5.0 out of 5 stars Rutter's Christmas 9 Jan 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This cd, for me, reflects the true essence of Christmas. I love the magic of Christmas and without Christmas carols playing around the house it does not feel the same. John Rutter's Colours of Christmas is a beautiful carol and could easily become a favourite.
