Product Description

Ruskin, whose life spanned almost a century from 1819 to 1900, was one of the most influential cultural and intelligent figures of his age. "There is no wealth but life" wrote Ruskin in his political essays of the 1860s. This biography shows him as a whole, and his vision of the good society.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, patient, rewarding, 18 May 2004

A very good examination of the life and career of one of our greatest thinkers and critics. Very broad ranging whilst being more concise than some other biographies I have read of Ruskin. Gives a very thoughtful account of his relationship with Effie and his domestic life in general. Prof Batchelor delivers masterful scholarship, style and interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Overview, 9 April 2001

A good, judicious overview of the life and works, recommended for those who thought Tim Hilton's 2 volumes could have benefited from disciplined editing.
