Product Description

Product Description

Four films featuring British actor John Mills. In the comedy 'The Baby and the Battleship' (1956), Able Seaman Knocker White (Richard Attenborough) finds himself literally left holding the baby after a quayside mix-up with the Italian family of his fiancée. Unable to return it before his ship sails, he enlists the help of best mate Puncher Roberts (Mills) to smuggle the child aboard. But babies are surprisingly demanding, and gradually the whole crew is drawn into helping keep it fed and washed - and undiscovered. Even so, the officers above deck start to puzzle over the increasingly strange happenings on board... In 'It's Great to be Young' (1956), Mills stars as Mr Dingle, the popular music teacher in an English school. When the headmaster threatens to close down the school band (partly because of Dingle's fondness of more modern music), the pupils come to his assistance. 'The Gentle Gunman', two Irish brothers (John Mills and Dirk Bogarde) arrive in London to launch an IRA bombing campaign, but one of them begins to have doubts about their mission. In 'The Family Way' (1966) Hywel Bennett and Hayley Mills play newlyweds living in a small, Lancashire village with the groom's dominating father (John Mills). When they are unable to consummate their marriage, the young bride determines it is her fault - neglecting to consider the bullying behaviour of the father towards her husband.

This is a really enjoyable DVD the more so for including the 1950s classic "It's Great to be Young" This film alone is much sought-after and here you have the complete, colour version, just like you saw all those years ago at the cinema. Video and sound are very good. Go on! Wallow in nostalgia and buy it!! Delivery from Amazon is, as usual, ultra-quick and you should have it (well-packaged) in a couple of days.

Wonderful collection of John Mills films. One in particular ("Its Great to be Young") has to be seen to be appreciated. Watch out for a young Richard O'Sullivan - brilliant piece of acting.

I grew up in the era that these great British films were made and I saw most of John Mills's films whan they were new. The main one for me in this collection has to be "It's Great To Be Young". I was twelve when this came out and I saw it at least five times over the next couple of years. It is one of those films that you smile most of the time that you are watching it because it has that feel good factor of some of the great character actors of the day. It is especially pleasing to see Richard O'Sullivan as the young scamp at the school. No wonder he went on to more great comedy roles later on such as "Man About The House" and "Robin's Nest".

All John Mills's films are good whether he is in a comedy or a drama he excells in all styles of film. Most of my generation (born 1944) will have seen many of his films at the cinema along with other great actors of the time. This is a brilliant collection and I sincerely recommend it to people of all ages.
