Possibly the greatest record of how it feels to be young(and not so young) in London and the sprawl of the new towns. The anger of youth turns into the yearning of the second age and the desperate tiredness thereafter. This is quite frankly breathtaking and its critics say more about it than any protagonist every could. This is England and these books pick up the grimy but fascinating nature of the country some of us live in.

If you didn't grow up in a 'working class' environment then this is probably not for you.

I read each book singly in turn, which is probably a better way to do it.

I thought the series showed a good insight into football culture (it didn't matter that it was Chelsea) and sought to get under the skin of a slightly confused gang of patriots. I say slightly confused because they lack a distinct identity, and they exist in an environment that is self-replicating, where they become increasingly reliant on one another for support.

Don't try and over-analyse it though. I did and look what happened above!

There is also a fair element of comedy in there, especially in Headhunters.

Well written in a modern style.

Quite simply, this is one of the most fascinating and gripping, humorous and terrifying, all enveloping reads for our generation. Football may be the link, but submersing yourself into these three compelling volumes, it will become apparent that not knowing your left back from your centre forward is of little hindrance.

King's characters are real people, from the inner city, or urban satellite town sprawl, doing what they have to do to survive and get their kicks. Each has it's own magical thread, that tacks it's way through each book.

If Desert Island discs included the odd paper book, then this neatly bound trilogy version would be top of my list. And that says something as a Spurs fan. They seem to get bashed at each turnstile.

Subsequent releases, Human Punk, White Trash and the latest, The Prison House, all convey John King's fantastic ability to communicate. A modern writer that should not be over looked. Even if your game is normally wearing whites and padding up. This trilogy of stories is a must read, not just for fans of football. It's an urban modern tale of life, love and fanaticism.
