John Ireland (1879-1962) is one of a number of 20th century British composers whose music is largely unperformed today, at least in the concert hall. In Ireland's case this is to be deplored for his music is modern-sounding yet accessible. This disc brings together a number of his most attractive and accomplished works, including two splendid overtures, Satyricon and A London Overture. The latter, with its catchy 'Piccadilly' main tune, is reminiscent of both Elgar and Eric Coates. The disc also includes the evocative and powerful symphonic rhapsody Mai Dun, inspired by Maiden Castle, the prehistoric fortification near Dorchester. The centrepiece of the disc is the substantial five-movement suite, arranged by Sir Charles Mackerras, derived from Ireland's only feature film score, for The Overlanders (1946). This stands up well outside its cinematic context. The Halle Orchestra is conducted by the still young, highly-talented John Wilson, who has made a formidable reputation in light and popular music but who is also a passionate advocate of British symphonic music.
