Ireland spent four years studying under Stanford at the Royal College of Music, and the earliest work on the disc - the Orchestral Poem in A minor - shows some of Stanford's, and thus Brahms' influence. But there is a bigger voice that reminds me of Finzi, though Ireland was his predecessor.
The two major works on this disc - A Downland Suite, and Concertino Pastorale - are shot through with that sense of loss which the seems to be central this genre.
Lovers of this 'school' of English music are once again indebted to Richard Hickox - and Chandos - for keeping alive this unjustly neglected music.
The Rest of the disc contains much interesting listening as well. The Concerto Pastorale is a beautiful example of the English Pastoral School. The Orchestral Poem is a premier recording of an early work. It sounds somewhat Brahmsian, but it indicates Ireland's early mastery of orchestration.
