Product Description

CD Description

* By the time that John Gary Williams recorded this album for Stax he was one of the label's veterans, having been signed as a member of the Mad Lads since the middle of the mid-60s. Now remembered as the home of soul dance `The Whole Damn World Is Going Crazy' is a fantastic piece of southern soul showcasing John Gary's voice on an album's worth of largely down-tempo material.

* Recorded at Stax and featuring most of the musicians from Isaac Hayes' group, the Movement, it is an undoubted collectors classic. However Soul fans have always loved the non album single `Come What May' which sells for well over £100, and BGP have included both sides of that 45 as a bonus.

Like Eric Benét's Lost In Time? This is the era and style he was recreating. From '73, this late period Stax album is a true gem, and an underselling, overlooked one at that. Williams voice finds an intriguing niche somewhere between Eddie Kendricks and Curtis Mayfield - yep, really - and on some lovely covers [Ask The Lonely, How Could I Let You Get Away and a surprisingly successful, slowed down and extended version of Bobby Goldsboro's Honey] plus some strong originals, it shines. The additional tracks have that Ben E King/Supernatural Thing feel, which is nice. A great album for all lovers of early seventies soul music.

Having returned to Memphis radicalised after 2 years drafted service in Vietnam John Gary Williams became an activist with the Invaders(affiliate of the Black Panthers) in 1973 he got his chance to put his political views to music. The result was this outstanding LP with the much sought after tracks:The Whole Damn World is Going Crazy and Come What May. Thanks to everyone involved at BGP records for making this available again, don't miss out buy this piece of soulful social history.

Quality 'Rare' Soul 7 Mar 2011
Not come across JGW before, but fantastic stuff. For those of you in the know, a bit like Leon Ware. Great stuff and a bargain. Why bother with Itunes, when you can get the CD, plus sleeve notes for less!
