What a refreshing set of piano concertos. The melodies ,themes and ideas are so different from the norm but are still fully traditional. It seems as though John Field has invented new exciting melodies which are very Chopinesque . One can see where Chopin gets a lot of his ideas from for his piano concertos. But still they are both individuals with additional interpretations to offer. John Field is new to me and I found him only because one of my favourite composers,Muzio Clementi, was Fields tutor.
You cannot fail to thoroughly enjoy this box set (and when you have try Muzio Clementi - especially his sonatas, duets etc. on the budget Arts label.(there are about 20 albums in the series.
Whilst I am waxing lyrical try my first love in composers for piano sonatas-Domenico
Scarlatti and his 13 discs of sonatas on the Naxos label.
Now I`ve spent your cash I shall return to listening to John Field.

Great music, don't get this compilation 23 Dec 2010
By B Lomborg - Published on Amazon.com

The music is great -- buy it, but buy it in the four separate recordings. (5 stars for the music, but the 1 star is for a very poor compilation.)

In this compilation, the first two discs have been mixed up (so the first two concertos are named 1&2 but really contain the music of 5&3, and the second two concertos are named 5&3 but contain 1&2). Moreover, the very first track, (named "Piano Concerto No. 1 in E flat major, H. 27: I. Allegro" which is really the first part of concerto 5) is inexplicably truncated at 3.47 (ends abruptly in the middle) whereas the full music is 17.23 long.

Complete John Field 2 Jan 2012
By Odcam - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
In this box-set edition of John Field's Piano Concertos (1-7, as well as his Divertissement 1&2 and some other bits and bobs) Miceal O'Rourke and the London Mozart Players create a wonderful partnership - the recordings have a sophisticated sparkle, just right for John Field. I had none of the issues expressed in a previous review regarding a mix-up between discs one and two. Highly recommended (a perfect partner to the fine Naxos series of Field's Nocturnes and Sonatas).
