John Farrar is more likely not known for writing one of the biggest hits from Grease famously knocked off the top of the charts eventually by St Bob and the boys who tore up a picture of Travolta and Newton John on TOTP. "You're The One That I Want" was tiresome after a while but a great underlying driving bass riff made it do what it said on the tin. Among other things on his CV John wrote songs played bass and lead in the Shadows and here we see his only solo effort. He is a very unassuming man, unusual for an Aussie perhaps? but of immense talent. Shads fans and maybe ON-J fans may have bought this already but if you are neither you are in for a treat. His days with Marvin Welch and Farrar showed him to be a great vocal arranger and harmony guy virtually up there with Crosby Stills Nash & Young and Brian Wilson. Singing in a high range voice but thankfully not Bee Gee clothes peg on the nose stuff he starts off "Reckless" with a great intro with that driving bass which then becomes more subtle as the song reaches into a multi tracked chorus."Tell Someone Who Cares" is one of the faster tracks on the album and again for bass fans listen to a great driving sound and understated guitar solo which does the business. "It'll Be Me Babe" penned with Hank Marvin does not hold back on energy."Can't Hold Back" is a song with contrasts of style within it.This album is so well produced as one might expect from a "producer". Every instrument played is crisply represented and bit of the "Fleetwood Mac isms" here and there adds to a flavousome collection of songs. This album is a natural progression as Marvin Welch and Farrar became Marvin and Farrar so why not Farrar?? This will not disappoint those who may never have heard of this very clever musician, producer, arranger, bass player, lead guitarist etc. Album may be 27 years old but stands the test of time. Go buy it.

Just before Colin Miles' (a huge Shadows fan himself) own record label See4Miles went bust they put out this splendid CBS 1980 album of 9 tracks with a Bee-Gees production type style. Not remastered but you could DCT it to improve it though.

John Farrar is best known as being Olivia Newton John's producer and songwriter. This is John's only solo album and it is excellent. John Farrar was a member of The Strangers in Australia and Marvin, Welch & Farrar and The Shadows in the U.K.
