Product Description

Product Description

The glory of John Donne's prose at its best is very different from that of his verse, but is equal to it; and there can be no question that his best prose is in his sermons. His sense of form and arrangement, his psychological insight, his differences of mood and emphasis, and his religious fervor will make this selection of ten sermons particularly interesting to the attentive reader familiar with Donne's poetry.

About the Author

Evelyn M. Simpson was coeditor with the late George R. Potter of the definitive ten-volume edition of the Sermons of John Donne. She was also the author of Study of the Prose Works of John Donne, and editor of Donne's Essays in Divinity.

First Sentence
AT FIRST, God gave the judgement of death upon man, when he should transgresse, absolutely, Morte morieris, Thou shalt surely dye: The woman in her Dialogue with the Serpent, she mollifies it, Ne forte moriamur, perchance, if we eate, we may die; and then the Devill is as peremptory on the other side,Nequaquam moriemini, do what you will, surely you shall not die; And now God in this Text comes to his reply, Quis est homo, shall they not die? Read the first page

An Unforgettable Spiritual Classic! 1 Sep 2004
By Christiana Washington - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
John Donne's poetic words pierce the heart and ignite the imagination. He speaks food for the soul, not just the heart. I have read and re-read his books for many years and cannot tell how deeply they have moved me and inspired me to be a better Christian. He was a profound writer, almost mystical and yet so very down to earth. A beautiful book that should not be missed by anyone interested in the life of faith.
