I am studying English at University and currently writing an essay on John Donne's Songs and Sonnets. After reading an abundance of books which have been either too complicated or too simple, Joe Nutt's book is 'just right' - a great find giving me just what I need. Recommended to any stuggling student who needs a mature, indepth analysis of Donne's poetry. Well worth buying.

This is a great little book. It combines a very comprehensive overview of Donne's poetry with very close commentary of some of the key poems. The author is a schoolmaster, and his teaching experience really shows as he explains technical terms for analysing poetry without ever allowing them to obscure the text he's reviewing.
I did slightly resent the very inflexible reading - Donne is a notoriously slippery poet, and I'd have preferred a few alternative interpretations of his works to have been acknowledged as being at least equally valid.
But generally, this was a real gem, and will be invaluable for students.

A friend asked me what I thought of the book when I was about 70 pages in and I replied it's not up to much - which encapsulates my experience of reading the whole thing. It's a good starting place, don't get me wrong, and perhaps sufficient for A-Level standard. However if you are a university student looking for critical enquiry into Donne don't buy this book; it's really not going to give you any insight above the completely obvious and inane. Go spend your money elsewhere.
