Product Description

Product Description

On 6 September 1948, John Derry became the first pilot in Britain to fly faster than the speed of sound. Exactly four years later he died tragically as his experimental prototype DH110 jet broke up in the air at the Farnborough Air Show, in full view of 120,000 spectators. In this authoritative biography, now available in paperback, the authors trace Derry's life story and the part he played in a thrilling era of aviation. They reveal how he became known for his brilliance as a test pilot, but was also loved and respected for his personal qualities.

John Derry 18 Nov 2009
Format:Hardcover
First class publication indicating great depth of background of a man whose life was curtailed at a far too early age.
Unfortunately little has been made of his achievements - the first man to fly through mach one in Britain - together with huge amounts of very risky assessment of research and development aircraft.
The book is the perfect tribute to a great courageous and very talented man

A king of the air 29 Nov 2009

I knew he was a master in aircraft public presentation. His career was a model.

John Derry 2 Jan 2010
By Milcon
Format:Hardcover
If there ever was a man that deserved a memorial statue to the work of Test Pilots this was him.
Many people will never have heard of him or could have imagined the importance of what John Derry achieved in his sadly cut short life.
The book read very easy and is one that shows just how brave test pilots of the post war jet era really were pushing the boundrys on these untested aircraft that unlike today never had the benefit of computer design simulaters and other technology, it really was by the seat of your pants and truly nail biting stuff.
Some excellent pictures of John Derry and of the great british aircraft he flew and helped test,a first class read about a great British aviation pioneer and De Havilland, the company he flew for.
