Review

'John Craxton took some persuading to agree to this book, so what a shame he did not live to see this exceptionally handsome and finely crafted monograph.' --- --Country Life

'This book. the first full, illustrated survey of Craxton's work, is an outstanding memorial to an artist who was overlooked for long periods of his life.' ----- The Anglo-Hellenic Review

Product Description

This is the first full-scale monograph on British artist John Craxton (1922-2009), a key figure in post-war painting who authorised this publication shortly before his death. Craxton was a brilliant and well-connected artist with a passion for Greek life, light and landscape. Rejected for military service in 1941, he shared premises in London with Lucian Freud, provided by their benefactor and friend Peter Watson. Through Watson he met other artists linked to Neo-romanticism and, like many of his generation, came under the influence of William Blake, Samuel Palmer and Graham Sutherland. But by 1945 his work was more closely connected with that of European artists such as Picasso and Miro. Always longing to escape, Craxton travelled around the Mediterranean after World War II, finally settling in Crete from 1960, where he continued to develop his Romantic pastoral themes in sunburst images influenced by Byzantine mosaics. He also created scintillating ballet and book designs. Ian Collins's engaging text is informed by his many conversations with the artist, who was also a celebrated wit and story-teller, and is supported by more than 200 reproductions of life-affirming paintings and drawings. The book will be welcomed by art historians, collectors, curators and all those with an interest in the history of modern British art.

Encapsulated magic 4 Jun 2011
Format:Hardcover
John Craxton was careful to stay out of the public eye declining exhibitions and, until the very end of his life, an biography. Making friends with Ian Collins about ten years ago he finally relented and this magic book is a distillation of their many conversations generously illustrated with masterpieces from all the phases of a long and fascinating life. With an introduction by Sir David Attenborough who was a life-long fan after buying a copy of Poet's Eye illustrated by John this book is launched to accompany an exhibition at Tate Britain and I hope that you will enjoy it as much as I did.

A Discovery 6 Aug 2011
By Nicolas
Format:Hardcover
In June had liked and admired at Tate Britain 3 paintings by an unknown artist
to me "John Craxton", I searched for a book on him and was lucky as his
biography was just published. Great to discover the life of this important artist and
also get to know his work thanks to the many illustrations of his works.

DAVID ATTENBOURGH WROTE THE INTRODUCTION , AND IS IN RAPTURES OVER JOHN CRAXTONS WORK, AND I CAN UNDERSTAND WHY ONCE YOU START LOOKING AT HIS PICTURES.
HE SEEMS TO HAVE ABSORBED ALOTOF DIFFERENT INFLUENCES,PICASSO BEING THE MAIN ONE BUT HAS CREATED HIS OWN WAY OF SEEING THINGS .THE PAINTINGS HE DID IN GREECE ARE WONDERFULL. MY OWN PERSONAL FAVOURITE IS PASTORAL FOR P.W. SHOWING THE SHEPHERD
PLAYING THE PIPES TO THE GOAT HERD. THIS WAS THE PICTURE THAT FIRST INTRODUCED ME TO
JOHN CRAXTON WHEN ISAW IT AT THE TATE SOME YEARS BACK. SUMMING UP THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK ON A SOME WHAT NEGLECTED BRITISH PAINTER WHO SHOULD BE MORE WELL KNOWN.
