Book Description

15 Oct 2010
This Purple Rose book is a collection of the first five stories in Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom series: A Princess of Mars (1917), The Gods of Mars (1918), The Warlord of Mars (1919), Thuvia, Maid of Mars (1920) and The Chessmen of Mars (1922). It contains all of the original frontispieces by Frank Schoonover and J. Allen St. John, enhanced and enlarged and is a high quality book with clear formatting and detailed contents. Visit Purple Rose at www.purplerosebooks.com and view our other titles and new releases. John Carter is the hero of Burroughs' Barsoom series. He first appeared in Under the Moons of Mars (later retitled A Princess of Mars) the story which catapaulted Burroughs into the limelight. It was the first of many novels and several sequels followed over the next three decades, further extending Burroughs' vision of Barsoom. The world of Barsoom is a romantic vision of a dying Mars, based on now outdated scientific ideas made popular by Astronomer Percival Lowell in the early 20th century. While depicting many outlandish inventions, and advanced technology, it is a savage, 'frontier' world, of honor, noble sacrifice and constant struggle, where martial prowess is paramount, and where many races fight over dwindling resources. It is filled with lost cities, heroic adventures and undiscovered ancient secrets. The series has inspired a number of well known science fiction writers, and also key scientists involved in both space exploration and the search for extraterrestrial life. It has informed and been adapted by many writers, in novels, short stories, television and film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Step back in time!! 16 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I first read the John Carter series many years ago when I was in my early teens and was blown away by the fantasy and descriptive powers of ERB. I was delighted to see and purchase these 5 volumes in all one book. Very well presented and illustrated book. Still makes me smile and relive my youth. Mind you part of the requirement way back then was to read ERB when under the influence of some "red leb", sadly those days are gone but the book remains a quality read whatever your age and influences!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing and Magical 1 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
Just love these stories - Burroughs' writing style is absorbing and magical. I couldn't put it down - I'd bought this book for my son, but thought I'd just have a quick look through it before giving it to him... well, he didn't actually get it until I'd finished reading it!

4.0 out of 5 stars John Carter Of Mars: A Collection 7 Feb 2012
By Andy
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
On the basis of the film, John Carter being released in cinemas, and after enjoying the books in ebook format, I decided I wanted a physical printed book of the stories.

This collects the first 5 books from 11 book Edgar Rice Burroughs Barsoom/John Carter series; A Princess Of Mars, The Gods Of Mars, The Warlord Of Mars, Thuvia Maid Of Mars and The Chessmen Of Mars, in large sized format, and feature the original artwork from Frank Shoonover and J Allen St John.

The first three stories detail John Carter's arrival on Mars (Barsoom), meeting Dejah Thoris, Tar Tarkas and his ascent to becoming The Warlord Of Mars. Book 4 involves his son Carthoris and Thuvia, who we first meet in The Gods Of Mars, and Book 5 revolves around John Carter and Dejah Thoris' daughter Tara.

I loved the stories. Pulp science fiction at it's best and definitely worth reading. After reading them you can tell that they've influenced a generation of science fiction, Star Wars, Avatar and more. I liked the style of Burroughs' writing, absorbing and action packed, and you actually care about the characters too. Highly recommended!

I read some of this series of book when I was a teenager and after seeing the new film decided to re-visit them. The writing style is oddly archaic but this adds to the charm of the books. Will be reading more
