Amazon.co.uk Review
John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars attempts a productive combination of SF elements (a largely terraformed Mars with its long-lost civilisation) and horror (mass possession that turns the victims into rampaging, self-mutilating monsters that kill and burn). A police-force detachment turn up in a mining community to collect a bandit, whose last heist was uncharacteristically violent, and soon find themselves under siege from rampaging hordes who used to be solid citizens. This is a fairly simple set of variations on stock Carpenter elements--a hybrid between Assault on Precinct 13 and In the Mouth of Madness. However, there is some powerful chemistry between Nastasha Henstridge's icy, drug-abusing police lieutenant and Ice Cube's bandit, Desolation Williams, made stronger by the lack of sexual tension. Other characters, such as Pam Grier's tough commander and Clea Duvall's nervous rookie, are more or less defined by plot functions; the mobs never become more than faceless, or facially distorted, anonymous menaces. This is one for die-hard Carpenter fans only.

On the DVD: Ghosts of Mars on disc comes with Dolby Digital sound and its original widescreen ratio of 2.35:1. A sparky commentary by Carpenter and Henstridge is included, which is informative, but otherwise there are uninspiring documentaries on the musical score, the special effects and the difficulties of shooting at night in the Mexican desert, as well as filmographies and the theatrical trailer. --Roz Kaveney

3.0 out of 5 stars THIS FILM WILL HAUNT JOHN CARPENTER..., 15 Dec 2002
By Lawyeraau (Balmoral Castle) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
This is a sci-fi/horror hybrid that looks like it may take the viewer along for an interesting ride, only to fall into a morass of absurdity, with bad acting amd worse dialogue. Written and directed by John Carpenter, it is not one of his better efforts.

The premise of the movie is relatively simple. It is the twenty second century and Mars is colonized by humans who live in some sort of matriarchal society, an issue which is never addressed nor explained, though reference is made to it. The Mars police are given a mission. They are to send a team of officers to a remote mining outpost, where there is a prison and bring back one of Mars most wanted, "Desolation" Williams (Ice Cube), to stand trial for murder.

The team, headed by two women (Pam Grier and Natasha Henstridge), arrives at the remote outpost, only to be greeted by apparent desolation (no pun intended). A closer look reveals indescribable carnage. They soon discover that many of those from the miming operation and from the prison have become possessed and turned into a frightening band of Marilyn Manson and Kiss doppelgangers who have pierced their bodies in indescribable fashion and are looking to finish off anyone who still looks human, all while roaring, howling, and screaming gibberish. Of course, the police joins forces with the surviving mining personnel and prisoners, including "Desolation" Williams, in an attempt to survive. Predictable carnage and action scenes follow.

Pam Grier is pathetic as the commanding officer, as her acting is so bad. Natasha Henstridge is better and has potential, though it is difficult to assess with the lousy dialogue she has been given. Moreover, why Joanne Cassidy accepted a part in this movie is beyond me, as it will definitely do nothing for her career. Ice Cube plays the part of a bad guy with enough panache that he leaves the viewer rooting for him. While most of the film is so-so, there are some truly chilling and interesting scenes. Unfortunately, the film also has more than its share of bad scenes.

If you enjoy sci-fi, horror, or John Carpenter films, you will probably enjoy this one somewhat. If not, deduct one star from this review.

3.0 out of 5 stars A guilty pleasure, 5 Jul 2006
By Jack "sevagram" (England) - See all my reviews

Ok. I'm not blind to this film's faults and I agree with nearly all the criticisms that I've read here, but for some weird reason I really like this film! I'm not sure why, exactly. Maybe it's the 'pulp' cheesiness that appeals to me (I like to think Carpenter intended this, but somehow I doubt it); or maybe it's because some of the scenes simply have to be seen to be believed (ie, a badly miscast Joanna Cassidy floating across the Martian landscape in a weather balloon!). Or it could simply be Carpenter's trademark violence and mayhem, which is always entertaining. Whatever the reason, we all have our guilty pleasures, and this is one of mine.

3.0 out of 5 stars There's no mistaking a Carpenter film, 1 April 2005
By "marcusmuck" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I enjoyed this film. It's refreshing and funny. There's no mistaking that it's a John Carpenter film. It has a good pace, witty one-liners and strong characters. It's also cheesy. But that's Carpenter for you.......

I mean, there's 200 psychos on the rampage and you're not supposed to kill them! So what do our heroes do? They blow the consequences! That's John Carpenter!

It's not the best film he has ever made but to his credit he's constantly renewing the framework he builds his films around.

This film has been denegrated by many reviewers but have these people forgotten how cliched his films can be? Surely this is one of their main attractions: they don't pretend to be anything else!

It has many similarities to a legion of other films (eg. Assault on Precinct 13, Mad Max and Rio Bravo). Carpenter has never worried about these things- take 'The Thing' for example which is a remake of Howard Hawk's 'Thing from another World'.

Ultimately though it's not scary - it's 'safe' really despite the threat of extinction and there's not enough time in the film to build tension and suspense.

Natasha Henstridge is a revelation in the lead role - she's a good actress! Jason Statham is brilliant too as the Cockney Sergeant (although I've yet to see him as anything else but 'streetwise)

The fighting (and there's a lot of it) is stylised and well choreographed (especially Henstridge).

Once again Carpenter writes the music and this time it's courtesy of Anthrax- I now see them in a new light.......

And finally, the DVD extras good- giving you a real insight into how the film was made.
