Unplugged Cale 31 Mar 2007
By S J Buck TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
This is really very good. John Cale is not a showman so don't buy this DVD if you're expecting that sort of thing.

What you do get is a good musician performing some of his best material alone at the Piano or Guitar. Stripping away some of the elbaorate arrangements of Cale's songs helps you to concentrate on whats important in the songs.

The concert was recorded in Brussells in the early 90's the DVD has fifteen tracks on it, including "Paris 1919" and "Dying of the vine".

Well worth getting if you can find a copy.

Cheap rendition 1 Dec 2009
Format:DVD
I'm a Cale fan, I was at this Brussels concert in the Palais des Beaux-Arts (now Bozar), and I own this on VHS, seen this edition. With not that much complete Cale footage around (2 early 80's Rockpalast vids and this one), this belongs in the avid fan's collection. However: (1) Cale himself admitted that the Brussels concert was not the best, because, as he was so stressed since it was the last occasion to get some performances straight for the eponymous live cd, he played the whole set quite fast, quite uptight... so the public was actually booing him at the end because we'd paid for (encores included) 1hr of music; (2) this must be the cheapest production ever; apparently they only had 2 cameras, so to "spice it up" they sometimes show mirrored images to create the illusion of an additional camera angle! In other words, visually it's as gripping as watching not even paint, but dust dry; (3) do consider that Cale had been playing this setlist more or less since the early 80's, so yes he does it good (better than early 80's), but problem is that actually the better word for his performance is "efficient" - in other words it's pretty much routine (even some introductory remarks are word-by-word identical to the early 80's Rockpalast vid). True, not half has routine as it would get 10 years later when he still played the same setlist, but still.
Fan & want Cale playing on vid, get this and the two Rockpalast ones. Otherwise, don't bother.

Intense concert 24 April 2012
Format:DVD
As a huge fan on the CD, I was thrilled when I found out that there was a DVD of it too. When I first put it on I thought hmmm, its OK, but not that engaging. Gradually I became spellbound. When it finished I immediately put it on again.

This is an intense concert - virtually no dialogue with the audience and he fair rattles through the pieces. But I think that only adds to the experience. You get sucked in. He's there to play, not to chat and if that means the concert is only an hour, then so be it. It is an hour listening to virtuoso performances of some amazing songs. (I went to a St Etienne concert in Glasgow once that lasted 40 minutes - that's poor value. Especially as I don't even like St Etienne...)

I had never thought about the different camera angles before. I think though that the fairly static nature of the filming adds to the sense that you are at the actual gig. How many different views do you get when you go to a concert? One, mostly.

The background info from another reviewer was very interesting, but I think I would still urge people to get this DVD, fans or not. It shows just how talented John Cale is. The same titled CD is intense and the DVD, for me, only reflects that.

I've never seen him live though, and maybe other performances are better. But if you like Fragments, then you'll certainly like the DVD.
