Product Description

Book Description

An outstanding gift book detailing the life and work of one of our most significant author-illustrators, packed with beautiful colour illustrations.

Product Description

John Burningham opens with a foreword by John's U.S. contemporary, Maurice Sendak, the creator of Where the Wild Things Are. This is followed by an appreciation of John's work by the critic Brian Alderson, before John himself goes on in his own words to explore his childhood, his schooling at Summerhill, his beginnings as an illustrator designing posters for London Transport, and then his hugely successful, award-winning and still-ongoing career as a picture book author and illustrator. We see developmental notes for his first picture book, Borka, sketches, and lavish colour illustrations from his backlist of over 40 books. Providing new insights into his work, this is an ideal gift for Burningham fans, and for anyone interested in illustration.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant!!!!, 16 Sep 2009

this book is a joy it is a wonderful tale written by a modest unassuming man about his life. He explains the influences which made him the artist who has held thousands of children and adults entranced by his stories. It has many beautiful illustrations so accurately reproduced from his story books but it also has early work that was a revelation to me. Throughout my teaching career I have shared his incredible gift of both picture and word with so many children and we have laughed and cried together over them. This book brought all that back too. I have shown it to two grown-ups now who are both determined to ask for it for Christmas! For me it's been worth every penny!!

Glorious pictorial memoir by children's author John Burningham.

A joyful book crammed with lots of anecdotes and fabulous pictures - the London Transport posters are wonderful!

I've just picked it up again and it's like I've seen it for the first time.
