This book is a window into the life of one of rugby's 'characters', not only does it tell about tales from his from his union days, through his rugby league career, and back to union, culminating in an unforgettable trip to South Africa with the British Lions! and also some funny episodes from his time 'on the beat' (he was also a policeman!)......this is a great read. highly recommended for anyone interested in sports, rugby in particular

Contrasting sports 20 April 2003
Format:Hardcover
An interesting book by one of my sporting heroes of the early 1990s. Watch out for JB's self love though!

The most interesting theme is the difference between the accounts of the two rugby codes: league chapters concentrate on the game wheras union ones seem to focus on the sport's laddish culture that Bentley clearly revelled in. League's reputation doesn't come out squeaky clean though with Bentley's alienation by the 'Schofield clique' for being an ex-union Policeman. Theres also an interesting insight on the Leeds dressing room when the big personalities of both Schofield and Hanley were in the team.

Well worth a read.
