While John Barrowman is undoubtedly best known in the United States for his "Dr. Who" and "Torchwood" alter ego Captain Jack Harkness (I won't mention his earlier TV experiments in Central Park West and Titans), this is a show man who was meant to sing. It is clearly a passion and his exuberance is infectious. I was lucky enough to see Barrowman in the intimate Los Angeles production of Sondheim's "Putting It Together" and it was perfection. I also happen to think that the political satire "The Fix" (for which he received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical) is one of the most criminally underrated soundtracks in existence. So, I'm a fan. And if you are perusing this DVD, you likely are too.
The John Barrowman Collection is an easy recommendation for any enthusiast--but I must point out that it is only a compilation of two previously released DVDs. This set re-packages 2009's "An Evening With John Barrowman" with 2010's "John Barrowman Live at the Royal Albert Hall." So if you already own either one or both of these concerts, I certainly wouldn't make an additional purchase of this set. If you only know Barrowman from his television persona, it may be important to note that his musical repertoire tends to show tunes, standards, and covers--so if your musical tastes don't align with enjoying this type of performance, this may not be for you. He also tends to intersperse his shows with personal anecdotes and has a playful banter with accompanying guests.
An Evening With John Barrowman: This is an extremely personal, even informal, show. Some highlights include a show-stopping rendition of I KNOW HIM SO WELL with Daniel Boys, the introduction of his parents, and a rousing finale of I AM WHAT I AM. With a lively band and some cheeky dancers, this is fitfully entertaining stuff.
Live At The Royal Albert Hall: More of a spectacle in every regard, somehow this comes off as no less personal. A more varied set-list (sometimes bordering on cheesy--Viva Las Vegas, Get The Party Started, Copacabana, a Gloria Estefan medley) provide variety from the typical ballads and show tunes. There are a few surprises and a guest appearance by Jodie Prenger (she won Barrowman's reality show competition I'D DO ANYTHING) make for a grand evening.
NOTE: For North American audiences, this is being released on Amazon in two different formats--PAL and NTSC. Traditional players in the United States and Canada will support NTSC, so I would specifically look for that version. PAL works with All Region players. Again, a great set if you don't own the individual concerts. But there isn't new material, so don't re-invest if it isn't necessary. KGHarris, 7/11.
