Bought this for my daughter at Christmas as she had been asking for it for ages. The idea is great but unfortunately does not work well in practice. The actual process of making the coins, cutting the foil etc is fiddly and I would imagine most younger children would find it impossible to do without help. There are only 4 moulds and the melting pot only holds enough chocolate to make two coins, which means (with melting & freezer chilling time) it takes about an hour total to make 4 coins. The press did not seem to work particularly well when imprinting the patterns as there doesn't seem to be enough pressure. As mentioned in other review there is no chocolate included so make sure you have some chocolate buttons or chips on hand. There are some sheets of gold foil included but won't go very far (especially if your little one is cutting them alone as you have to be careful in order to get more than 4 discs from each sheet). I guess silver foil would work just as well although we haven't tried yet. In my opinion would be better if there were more than 4 moulds and a larger melting pot included so you could make bigger batches. Some of the parts (particularly the pressing plate) stick already when used so I'm not convinced that it will last very long. Time will tell. All that said my daughter did enjoy making the coins but it's a lot of messing about for 4 coins an hour. I personally feel you'd be better buying a chocolate fountain (which my son received for a Christmas gift) - lots of chocolate, lots of fun and a lot easier to organise! Would I buy it again - no.

We purchased this for our daughters birthday as she had asked for it every time she saw it on TV. If you follow instructions it will take you well over an hour to make a max of 6 coins! I heated my own supplied chocolate in the microwave on a medium heat, which shaved nearly 40 mins off the process. (Instructions say don't microwave, I say do!) This also allowed enough chocolate to be melted in one hit to do the 6 moulds. Then my daughter helped my pour it in the moulds. Waited 15 mins to set in the fridge, then she was able to foil and emboss, which is the bit that kept her interest. (she's 6 years old)Not very neat, but she was happy with the 6 coins, but then happily helped me put it all back in the box and hasn't mentioned it since. Says it all really!

I made chocolate coins with the grand-children in half term with the "John Adams Coin Maker" my grandaughter had asked for for her birthday. The chocolate melting bottle was pathetic, while it was safe to melt chocolate as it wasn't hot or dangerous for kids, it took so long to melt such a tiny amount the kids got bored waiting. I resorted to melting the chocolate in a bowl over a pan of hot water which worked well but must be diligently supervised. There weren't eough moulds to keep the flow, and fun, of making the coins going as we had to keep waiting for the coins to set before we could make four more and the foiling mechanism wasn't very good. Never-the-less we made 6 coins and filled one net over about 3-4 hours and my grandaughter seemed very pleased. The other grand-kids seemed satisfied with the biscuits we "iced " with the remaining chocolate and being allowed to lick the bowls.

Sounds simple enough doesn't it? But there are pages of instructions - which we re-read several times. The kids (age 6) were frustrated cause mummy and Aunty were trying to do the setting up. The melting bit was easy but to get nice flat choc coins was hard. Ours were lumpy and had air bubbles which meant that when you take the choc coin out if the holder, it just broke up. I would recommend the other one, the choc lolly maker. It's easier and quicker for small kids.

Bought this as a Christmas present for my 8 year old niece - she'd wanted one for a while. We spent some time making coins on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day and made rather a mess in the process!! It is a bit fiddly to use at times so adult help was required and you also have to wait at least 20 mins for the chocolate to set during the process so patience is needed too. No chocolate is provided in the pack so it was a good job that I'd also bought a chocolate pack - although any chocolate buttons will do. I do think that it's rather disappointing that there isn't any chocolate in the coinmaker kit and the product description doesn't really make this clear either. Would be rather frustrating to receive this gift and not be able to use it because there wasn't any chocolate buttons available. We made several coins - some were more successful than others although maybe further practice will help. We have already used most of the gold foil so it doesn't last long. There is a refill pack that you can order although ordinary silver foil will work apparently. Overall, a good present and it gave my niece something to do over the school holidays. It remains to be seen how much she will use it in the future but we had good fun together even if we did make quite a mess!!
