Rather messy!!! 2 Jan 2012
By Readie
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
Bought this as a Christmas present for my 8 year old niece - she'd wanted one for a while. We spent some time making coins on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day and made rather a mess in the process!! It is a bit fiddly to use at times so adult help was required and you also have to wait at least 20 mins for the chocolate to set during the process so patience is needed too. No chocolate is provided in the pack so it was a good job that I'd also bought a chocolate pack - although any chocolate buttons will do. I do think that it's rather disappointing that there isn't any chocolate in the coinmaker kit and the product description doesn't really make this clear either. Would be rather frustrating to receive this gift and not be able to use it because there wasn't any chocolate buttons available. We made several coins - some were more successful than others although maybe further practice will help. We have already used most of the gold foil so it doesn't last long. There is a refill pack that you can order although ordinary silver foil will work apparently. Overall, a good present and it gave my niece something to do over the school holidays. It remains to be seen how much she will use it in the future but we had good fun together even if we did make quite a mess!!

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
Bought this for my daughter at Christmas as she had been asking for it for ages. The idea is great but unfortunately does not work well in practice. The actual process of making the coins, cutting the foil etc is fiddly and I would imagine most younger children would find it impossible to do without help. There are only 4 moulds and the melting pot only holds enough chocolate to make two coins, which means (with melting & freezer chilling time) it takes about an hour total to make 4 coins. The press did not seem to work particularly well when imprinting the patterns as there doesn't seem to be enough pressure. As mentioned in other review there is no chocolate included so make sure you have some chocolate buttons or chips on hand. There are some sheets of gold foil included but won't go very far (especially if your little one is cutting them alone as you have to be careful in order to get more than 4 discs from each sheet). I guess silver foil would work just as well although we haven't tried yet. In my opinion would be better if there were more than 4 moulds and a larger melting pot included so you could make bigger batches. Some of the parts (particularly the pressing plate) stick already when used so I'm not convinced that it will last very long. Time will tell. All that said my daughter did enjoy making the coins but it's a lot of messing about for 4 coins an hour. I personally feel you'd be better buying a chocolate fountain (which my son received for a Christmas gift) - lots of chocolate, lots of fun and a lot easier to organise! Would I buy it again - no.
