This is a splendidly produced book, hard bound in linen and printed on satisfyingly thick paper. The colours of the illustrations are as true to life, as one has a right to expect, but seldom encounters. I only hope Paul Holberton Publishing will delight us with further volumes of an equally high standard. We have had to wait a long time for a comprehensive biography of Zoffany who, despite a certain popularity, has been more or less neglected for over half a century. Penelope Treadwell appears to have been the first to write and publish a book for the bicentenary of Zoffany's death; she has not been the last. Her text reads easily. There are the occasional irritating solecisms and clichés, which momentarily detract from one's enjoyment, none the less the whole is an admirable achievement. The book should appeal to anyone remotely interested in 18th century painting, specialist or otherwise. Buy it.
