Give it a chance,..,

This review is from: Joey - Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
Many of my friends who used to watch 'FRIENDS' (the series) have quickly taken to the new sitcom 'JOEY' with a negative attitude. The first few episodes are weak and sure it's not as good as 'FRIENDS' but there are some classic comedy moments in there and some great episodes later on. It is a comedy so be more open minded, try to enjoy it! As a big 'FRIENDS' fan I do love the connections between the two shows and the few references but on a whole I just love 'JOEY' for what it is; a cool, easy-going comedy series. Infact one of my friends who had always hated all the 'FRIENDS' series has really enjoyed the 'JOEY' coverage on t.v. I'm hoping to get him watching friends in no time, even if we do watch from series 10 back to 1. My personal favourite character is Michael, Joey has all the great one liners but Michael as a character is very funny to watch and very easy to love, I can't wait for the second series! If you liked friends I really do hope you give this a good chance and you should love it. If you're a fan of any American sitcoms then you should definately try it out.

At the end of the TV show "Friends" all of the characters had settled down - Rachel and Ross had got back together with their baby Emma, Chandler and Monica adopted twins and Phoebe and Mike had tied the knot, so that left Joey (Matt Le Blanc) which gave us this excellent spin-off where he has moved to Hollywood which has been set up by his sister Gina (Drea De Matteo) to live with his nephew Michael (Paulo Costanzo) and to pursue his dream of becoming a movie star.
I'd like to start off by saying that this show is brilliant - easily one of the best sitcoms I have seen and definitely the best spin-off since Frasier. Ive watched both series 1 and 2 (which I had to order from Amazon.ca) and it is hilarious with such strong characters and good storylines. Why they ever cancelled this show is beyond me as although it isn't Friends (and I didn't think it ever intended to be) Joey is a really fun show that was finished way too early. Going back to the characters - Joey is Joey, maybe a little bit more over the top than he was in Friends but he is still the womanising, sandwich eating actor that we all grew to love in the ten years of Friends. His sister Gina is a similar character to Joey but is a little stronger minded and tougher than her younger brother. Her son Michael is the brains of the family who doesn't have his uncles skills with the ladies. Joey's next door neighbour Alex (Andrea Anders) is a lonely lawyer whose husband is away a lot of the time. Howard, also a neighbour, idolises Joey and would do anything to be his best friend. Joey's alcoholic agent Bobbie (Jennifer Coolidge) is hard mouthed and appears to have a heart of stone but she does do a lot to help Joey out over the seasons. And finally there's Zack (who first appears in Season 2) who is an actor/director/film crew/new best buddy of Joey. As well as the excellent set of characters, the storylines are all very funny and have some side-spitting jokes and situations that could only happen to Mr Tribbianni. One problem I found with this show though was Joey falls in love a little too often - keeping in mind he only ever fell in love once (with Rachel) in the whole 10 series of Friends - he falls for 3 different women in just 44 episodes in 'Joey'. A few gueat appearances from his friends from Friends would have been good too. Overall I've already made it clear that I really like this show and can't believe why it was cancelled as there's not many US sitcoms as good as this one. I think people perhaps expected a little too much from this and wanted it to be exactly like Friends so were disappointed by this, but if you watch this as a stand-alone show you will love it! NOTE: If you're after season 2, this is available on the Canadian Amazon site costing about £25.

As every Joey viewer is, I am a die hard Friends fan. You will always no matter what be comparing it to Friends at some time during the episodes. The first few are to a good standard and are better than some of the episodes. As it was on a Sunday night it gave me something to watch as Sundays are usually rubbish for TV. Some weeks would be pretty good then another week i would be disappointed. The episodes are different as in one episode Joey could be all over the place but in another he could be in a certain place (eg awards show) for a long period if not all the show. The finale was very predictable. I would recommend this to buyers as it is now at a decent price but not at 50 quid as it isnt worth it. Give it a try.
