PRAISE FOR JOEY PIGZA SWALLOWED THE KEY:

'... It is a tremendous achievement to incorporate so much understanding, and explanation into a cracking good story. I found it a vivid and startling book.' The School Librarian

'The reader...will quickly be engaged by the gritty honesty of this character who has a great deal of moral courage ... Joey Pigza stays with you long after the last page has turned.' Carousel

'could easily become required reading for anyone who works or lives with children; and for any child who enjoys brilliant comic writing tinged with the poignancy of reality.' The Bookseller

'Jack Gantos has written a beautiful story that will inspire any kid suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or any behavioural or learning difficulties at all in fact. ... The book is written as a fantastic stream of consciousness narrative that mirrors Joey's energy levels, and is just as wired as he is. Gantos really makes you get under the skin of this adorable and troubled little boy. ... More than anything, this book provides hope' Schoolsnet.com

'When I started reading it ... I couldn't stop and finished it in two sittings. Would that most adult books were as gripping.... Jack has a marvellous humane quality in his writing which enables him to see all points of view and make even the most weird and difficult characters comprehensible.' Lynne Reid Banks (author of The Indian in the Cupboard books)

'Jack Gantos provides us with as near an insight into a troubled brain as it is possible to get. ... The writing style cleverly conveys Joey's wild and uncontrollable thought processes ... This is an extraordinary book: moving, intensely funny and wonderfully enlightening' English and Media Magazine

'The most absorbing novel for children that I have read in a long time... convincing, wild, funny, sad and original' Boston Sunday Globe --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars This writer understands ADHD, 25 Nov 2002

I have a little boy with mild adhd. It is hard for him to understand his differences sometimes. I got this book hoping he would be able to identify with Joey. Although the reading level was a little high for him when I first bought it, this book has become a bed time favourite. His sister often reads it to him (fairly amazing as they dont get on very well usually!). I think it has helped her to understand why her brother can be a pain sometimes! Joey is different in some ways but first of all he is a boy with the same feelings as any other boy. Anyone working with kids should give this book a go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joey Pigza Loses Control in a spectacular way!, 14 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Joey's Mom could no longer cope with his Dad's erratic behavior & has been raising him alone, as best she can, coaching & encouraging him while he stabilizes his hyperactive tendencies which had him spiraling out of control. Joey now has some special tools he's been taught to use when he gets stressed out. He must, however, refresh his medicinal patches daily.

Finally the big day arrives when his Mom borrows a friend's car & drives him to visit his dad & grandmother, where they all once had lived together & Joey suddenly has some very strong memories of those years.

This time though, Joey is in control & knows it. Even as his Grandmother wheezes out mean comments, she begins to con away from him his emergency stash of cash. Even as his Dad takes him to a theme park where he says he's gotten so much inspiration for handling his life, Joey can't make much sense of what his Dad says & soon realizes that his Dad isn't much interested in what makes him tick. Joey so wants this visit to work that he defers to his Dad & when they discover they have baseball in common, all things are possible, even getting off his medicine. Or are they?

Phew! What a fast read! I couldn't put it down! I do recommend it for both youngsters & olders alike - an entertaining, informative & useful read on a hasty & insidious disease.
