Joe Pass is one of the Greats on the Jazz Guitar (listen to 'Virtuoso' if you doubt it). In this tutorial he exhibits a wonderful rambling style of description but spot-on demonstration. His fantastic style comes across, especially re' substitutions & bass lines. With just a single run-through I learned a lot - even about progressions I'd been doing for years. And I realised the limitations of some techniques I'd practised for those years - e.g. barre chords.
So what does the DVD add to Joe's presentation? Chord shapes on screen as he describes & demos them - PAUSE, PRACTISE, PLAY & JOIN IN. The chord corner is a good way of polishing up your ear off-line in learning 'obscure' chords. Slow Motion has its use in discovering how Joe really does do what he does. I could go on.
So why not 5 stars? The DVD fails to use one of the major strengths of DVD / VCR - to flip back or forward through material. So you've worked through a short piece & you wnat to review it. Not easy - only by dropping into Chapter X or Exercise Y & working forward. You can't skip through some of Joe's rambling, charming though it is. Worst of all, you can't access Joe's short demo of his brilliance near the start without ploughing through the wordy intro by Hot Licks & Joe's self-conscious intro - until he gets that guitar going. I'd love to inspire myself through watching him or, better still, show others (e.g. my wife!), who do not appreciate Jazz just why Joe is such a Virtuoso.
Even so. Worth the money IF you're Intermediate or above.
