5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT, HONEST, DOWN TO EARTH & GRIPPING 20 April 2010

This is a down to earth, no frills, and no holds barred, account of the career of Joe Longthorne - the man behind the voice. Having been gifted with a spectacular voice he was 'discovered' as a child in Hull, where he came from a Romany background with the odds stacked against him for the bright lights, fame and fortune. He tells of his first experiences with TV, of his clubland apprenticeship, and ultimately how he rose to fame - and his own TV spectacular. Alone, with his own show he was pulling in the same amount viewers as does the X Factor and BGT today!

This uniquely talented man then gets the ground pulled from under him, as they find he has leukaemia!
He tells of his twenty+ year battle with this killer disease - and the effects of this on his career, finances, family and personal relationships.

None of the treatments work long term - and aged fifty he finds himself with one option - to try for a bone marrow transplant, which relies on his finding a suitable donor - otherwise he has twelve weeks left to live. The donor is found, the process takes place, and ends with him in a coma.. ..

This IS NOT A 'FEEL SORRY SAGA' or a boring account of medical procedures - this is a funny, sad, amusing and sometimes mad, account of the man that he is today. With five years behind him 'cancer free' he is covering new ground - both career wise, and lifewise.

This is a MUST read, for music lovers and non musical alike. Dont miss it !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest account of a Superstar 14 Jun 2010
By D. Toms
This is a very honest account of Joes' life littered with anecdotes of his early years. It is told in Joe Longthornes own voice and said exactly how he would speak which helps to keep the book real. The story is a moving and yet funny and sometimes sad account of a man that is one of this country's best ballard singers. It gives an insight into his childhood years and the tragedy of as he began to make the big time how he was struck down with leaukeamia. It goes into his feelings at this terrible time showing a courage and tenacity that helps to make him a much loved and respected Star to his hundreds of adoring fans. If you have never really known who Joe Longthorne is then read this book and you will not only be a fan for life but inspired to overcome your own difficulties.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended 5 April 2010
By Diabolo
This is a warts and all account of Joe Longthorne's rise to fame and the trials he has encountered along the way.

It smacks of honest, open truth and the reality that showbusiness is not necessarily the golden chalice it is often perceived to be. He is clearly a fighter and what is abundantly clear from these pages is the loyalty of his fans and his appreciation of them.

A highly recommended read, particularly for those who are interested in the showbiz of the 70's & 80's. Reads like a who's who of showbiz from the early days of his career up to the present day. It details his illness and his battle to overcome it.

Longthorne is clearly a generous man who owes it all to his fans and knows it.

If you like Joe Longthorne you'll love this book. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joe Longthorne Autobiography 15 April 2010
I have read many Autobioraphies, but never one so honest and truthful. It is well written and easy to read. Joe deserves for this book to do well and hopefully it will go a long way to bring him the recognition and rewards he so justly deserves. I admire his unselfish decision that all proceeds from the sale of the book will go to Charity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Joe 27 May 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a really good read and tells us exactly what Joe has been through with his illness, he is so brave. Joe Longthorne is an exceptionally talented man. I have seen him quite a few times on stage and always been thoroughly entertained, he has the most amazing voice and can do impersonations of loads of people. When he tells a tale it is very funny, so singer, comedian and impersonator extrordinaire is he. I will never understand why he is not more popular in this country and not on television more. Is it his management, or is it because there are very few variety programmes on TV? He used to have his own show on ITV in the 80's and he would be on programmes like Des O'connor tonight. Yet, there are still people who have never heard of him. I really hope that now he is in better health he is seen more often on TV. If you like Joe you will love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 29 July 2010
A superb read. What a performer too! And I have to say, one of the kindest, nicest performers out there who adores his fans and always gives them time. Buy this book. It is amazing.

Joe is a warm and lovely man, which comes across in this book. Once I started to read it, I couldn't put it down. He has fought many tough battles throughout his life, yet fame comes easy to him - his army of fans love him! But he doesn't let this fame "go to his head". He appreciates all he has, and all he has been given. The book has sad and tender moments, but happy and humerous ones too. In time, I know I will read the book again.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN EXCEPTIONAL STORY FROM AN EXCEPTIONAL MAN ! 8 April 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This has to be the best biography I have ever read, I'm probably old fashioned but I'm not in favour of these young "jumped up" OK type celebs who have five minutes of fame and then bring out the obligatory book. You cannot write or publish an autobiography or have someone write a biography until you have experienced life and, boy, this man has certainly lived an amazing life!!! I would like to say that the book is very warm, very touching and easy to read, pick it up and do a couple of chapters and then take a break, you are reading the words and you can hear Joe saying them, he;'s there in front of you in your head, I like this quality very much and think Chris Berry has done full justice to Joe and all his fans in the way he has written the book.
I commend Joe for his total honesty, the book takes you right through every emotion and more, you wonder how on earth he has made it through, thank god that he has, and if I did not have total respect and admiration for Joe and the way he has battled through I certainly do now, he is a shining example to us all. I am only a couple of years younger than Joe and I laughed till I rolled on the carpet reading all the tales about his younger days "twagging" as I think he called it off school, on the ferry and losing his ice cream onto some bloke's head and then all about his "courting days" in the daisies, etc.
In a nutshell, the book will make you laugh, it will touch and move you deeply and bring tears and most of all it will make you appreciate and love the man who is Joe Longthorne even more than you did before. Great to see Joe on TV recently talking about the book, think this will hopefully open many doors for him and bring him true recognition and reward once again for his gigantic talents.
