Review

"A very appealing picture book...giving salient facts about a goose from the egg hatching to the life of the full-grown goose." The School Librarian on My Goose Betsy; "Gentle, thought-provoking, and a real delight to read and read again... The pictures are enchanting, with lots of tiny details to pore over... A book to truly warm your heart." The Guardian on Jody's Beans; "Gentle Giant Octopus transforms the creature's reputation from gruesome to awesome, through inventive, magical illustrations and lyrical narrative, helping the reader to take in an impressive range of facts without effort." The Times Educational Supplement, Primary; "Full of facts and surprises...a distinguished array of artists and authors, and a (narrative) approach more serendipitous than encyclopaedic. Each book has an entirely original slant on its subject." The Guardian; "The best information books are so interesting that they make you want to find out more. The Read and Wonder books do just that." Margaret Meek, Emeritus Reader, Institute of Education, University of London

5.0 out of 5 stars A gentle, touching book for young children 9 April 2002
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This beautiful book is one of my son's favourites, and one we read over and over again. It is the story of the runner beans grown by Jody and her Granda. Doyle's text is gentle and wonderfully descriptive, but also very informative. It tells you all you need to know to grow your own beans - preparing the soil, planting and caring for the plants, right through to cooking the beans and saving the seeds for next year!
Allibone's delicate and pretty drawings have plenty to look at - and the start of the show has to be the white cat, who appears in almost every picture! It is a stunning debut for this new artist who says she hopes to inspire children to grow things - well, it certainly worked for my little boy - he's hooked!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful and informative. 24 May 2011
Format:Paperback
This is a delightful story about growing not only beans, but also developing patience, creating memories and nurturing relationships. The illustrations are charming, clever (spot mum in the background to see what she is growing) and full of wonder. My three year old loves it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An ordinary story made magic 14 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is an ordinary story about ordinary beans. But it is made charming by the challenge it sets the small leading character, and hopefully will enourage other readers to learn how to grow things and to love nature. The pictures are magical and the whole production has an almost Victorian appeal.
