This book was recommended to me by a Rhodesian man of about 30; I'm a 67 year old English woman, which demonstrates its wide appeal. Without realising it I've learnt so much about Africa and man's relationships with animals and his battles with the land. I've always read a lot but, without doubt, this was the most exciting, happiest, saddest and overall most wonderful book I've ever come across. What's more it's written in such beautiful and imaginative prose that it was a sheer joy throughout. I shall go on to read more and more about Africa now.

Every male teenager should be forced to read this book. It is about men, when they were men. Old Rocky sums it up with his views on luck; "Luck's just the thing any man'd like ter believe is the reason for his failure and another feller's success. But it ain't so. When another man pulls off what you don't, the first thing you got ter believe is that it's yer own fault, and the last that it's his luck. And you jus' got ter wade in and find out whar went wrong, and put it right, 'thout any excuses and explanations." The book goes on to cover those rare (today)qualities of self-reliance, resourcefulness, loyalty, determination and so many other positive aspects of life that have sunk in the mire of dependency on the state.

I borrowed an old copy of this book with picture plates. It is excellent especially for anyone who is in love with the stafford. The special bond between owner and dog is emphasized throughout this book. I am soon to go on safari in africa and only know of half the mammals because of this book. It is a book I will never forget.

I was born in 1935. My father had a first edition of this book, which he and my two older brothers really praised. My eldest brother won't let go of it, so I was delighted to find you not only had a handle to supply this as an e-book but that it had all the wonderful original illustrations on the pages. They certainly don't have books produced like this any more. As to the story, Jock is a dog, born after the start of the great trek south through Africa. His mother is a brave bitch who protects all and sundry from the nasties of the bushveldt. Jock inherits his mother's valour, and is involved in many escapades almost losing his own life in the ensuing battles.
The story is told through the dogs appreciation of the countryside and it's flora and fauna, and is in itself a great travelogue of days gone by in what was then, a mystical continent. A beautifully generated read for anyone who appreciates animals, people and nature, in fact almost a must. Would make a good subject read for school exams, instead of the dryness of some enforced literature.

A well written book, however, for me it took a little time to adjust to the style of writing. Generally good English. Some of the descriptions will be unfamiliar to readers who are not from South Africa but eventually become more readily understood from the context as you read on. Having been to South Africa you do get the feel of the surroundings from the various events and story lines which make the book so much more alluring. A book for all ages and if you are a dog lover so much more. You may feel a little uneasy about the direct hunting aspect but one must understand the animals were usually killed for food and not for "sport". Of course the events are from a different era, and a time and place, where views and lifestyle were different from the 21st century! There is excitement, humour, suspense, and pathos in this book without sentimentality, which makes a very good read although a little expensive from some sources. My opinion, go ahead and buy ,you wont be disappointed.

I really enjoyed the rich and descriptive writing about a man and his exceptional dog, and their experiences in the South African bushveld. The writer was my great grandfather's business partner and the beautiful, fluid writing of that era comes through. It is very easy to imagine how it all was then!

I bought this book on a recommendation from tour guide as I travelled South Africa. Brilliant story based on real life events. It brought back the sights and sounds of South Africa. Wonderful.
